I travel by plane only about once a year...and I really love it. Today my daughter from Arizona was to leave New York where she was visiting my other daughter. Well their plane took off and was leaking fuel! They made a quick landing in Rochester NY then bussed everyone back to Syracuse. She said it was quite scary! Do you have a fear of flying? Have you ever had a close encounter with a plane mishap?

hello jillhill, i was afraid of flying before i flew for the first time. since then i've always looked forward to the flight. i only fly when i go on holiday and to me it's part of the holiday. when the suitcase is taken at check in and we're free to pass customs the holiday has started. i wouldn't like to take a long haul flight, the sheer boredom would be hard to deal with. the longest i've flown for id five and a half hours from England to Cyprus and after that length of time i'm more than ready to step off the plane. i would love to visit Australia but the flight would just be too long, i hope to make it to America too but that flight would be more bearable. [TheModfather]
You are right....the flight isn't too bad. I have flown to Europe and it was alot better then the flight to Hawaii though both take about the same amount of time. [jillhill]
I've never really been in a plane mishap. I've flown in icy weather and wondered why the flight wasn't delayed (the de-icing of the wings didn't look very effective to me), but besides mild turbulence, flying has been pretty carefree for me. So I like to fly, although I haven't flown in years. The worst part of the entire flying experience is waiting for my luggage when the flight is over! angry [AmbiePam]
That's a fact! [jillhill]
No I am not afraid of flying, I actually enjoy flying. There was one emergency that one of the planes face. There was a storm in the air and the plane had to make some detours. So around 2 hours from our destination the plane started running out of fuel. So we had to make an emergency landing. We ended up 3 hours late, but everything was good. For the past two months there have been many crashes and emergencies, especially with Airbus planes. These things play on your mind sometimes. [Mac6999]
I am slightly scared of it for 2 big reasons; 1. I am scared of height to start with 2. No smoking for god knows how many hours! lol Apart from that, I'm pretty fine with it. I believe there are higher chances of dying from driving a car or riding a bicycle too. [ausgc21]
You are right about that! [jillhill]
OMFG Jill! I'm really glad to hear that your daughter is alright, but I am getting ready to fly next Wednesday to Florida and I am already scared to death! This was not a good to hear this particular plane story for me! Thankfully this story had a nice ending! I am already not wanting to get on the plane for this flight! My seats are way in the very back of the plane, I mean on the tail! Not very comforting! I have tried to change them, but since I booked late that's all they have available or the exit seats and I'm not sitting there! If there is an emergency I'm not helping anyone out except me! Now I am even more freaked then I already was! Not enough tranquilizers to get me on this flight and I have to go! It is a non-refundable ticket and my mom is so excited to see me! Oh crap! [Opal26]
I am sorry..but you can take comfort in the fact that they got the plane down safely! [jillhill]
I am not afraid to fly. I wish I had the money to fly first class sometimes, but that is another story. [bobmnu]
I thought about that on my last flight....is it worth the extra money? I don't know..but it would be nice to be first on and off! [jillhill]
Hi Jill, Oh I love flying but need to renew passport so won't be going anywhere for a while LOL. I can imagine though that it must have been quite scarey knowing there was a problem with te lane and I am pleased to hear they turned back and landed safely. Huggles. Ellie :D [ellie333]
Yes I do Jill, a big fear, I also have a Fear of heights, I have never flown and never want to as I know I would break into panic in a bad way I also suffer from Claustrophobia, so of course that would not help When my Children go on Holiday and fly (their Dad moved to spain) it scares me and for the 5 hours they are flying, I sit here in fear, till they send me a message to say they arrived safe [gabs8513]
I know how you feel about the kids flying....I am waiting to hear that my daughter made it okay today! [jillhill]
The first time that I got into a plane was in 1969. Since that time I have flown in a sizable number of planes (of different vintages) for various airlines (some high-class organisations, some out-and-out cowboys), in a varied number of seating arrangements (with so much leg-room it could be imagined, or twelve hours cooped up in a position where my knees could not move because the seat in front was already right on top of me), across three continents (Europe, North America and Asia). In all that time I have never once been anywhere near anything resembling a plane mishap. Which actually is the way it should be. Now if you want to discuss close encounters with road accidents (statistically far more deadly ....) OK, not this posting. [astonysh]
I know....they say you have a much higher chance of dying on the road! [jillhill]
no i am not afraid of it,i love the feeling of flying,so great and cool, but yeah right it's not 100% safe flying, there r always accidents, this doesn't make me fear of flying which is healthy 4 the body,i think. [dafengluobote]
You are so right! [jillhill]
I am not afraid of flying...but for some reason, as fast as I run and as hard as I flap my arms, I just can't seem to get off the ground. lol Actually, I have only flown once in my life, and I was only four or five at the time and it was like a 20 minute trip in a private plane at an air show. I really don't have any vivid memories of it, except that after we landed and stopped, the pilot let me play with the "steering wheel" for a moment... [The_Lamb_Lies_Down]
I bet that was fun! [jillhill]
The only time I am afraid while in a plane is when they turn and tilt towards the ground. If I happen to look out the window at that particular time I become a bit nervous- probably due to the fact that I am scared of heights. When the plane is flying straight it does not bother me at all. Because I have this problem I tend to try and get an aisle seat whenever possible when I fly. [madmillionaire]
That's a good thing then! [jillhill]
Glad they were all safe and bussed back to Syracuse without anymore complications. Funny you mention this as I am flying next week. I don't like to fly. I will be real anxious the day before the flight and the day of the flight. Just not my fun thing to do but driving to New Mexico from the midwest would take me a day or more and I get too sleepy driving for long periods as I get older. I wouldn't sleep well either if I had to stop at a motel/hotel for one night alone. [carolbee]
I wouldn't either.....and I think of all the time wasted on the road! [jillhill]
I'm glad they were o.k. I'll put it to u this way. In my 66 years i have never flown & don't intend to start at this late date.rolleyes [ANTIQUELADY]
Yes... I am afraid to fly... I ahve flew once a very long flight from Hong Kong to San Fransisco, it was like 16 hours? or little more? I was squeezed the whole time in the flight... not fun at all and I don't particularly like when it is taking off, I felt like riding on a roller coaster which I don't like either... and sometimes it could get very rough as well... it is scary to me... I don't like to fly at all... [mermaidivy]
I can be a little scary! [jillhill]
The first and only time that I flew anywhere I was twelve I went by my self to Texas from Michigan, I loved it. I would fly again in a heart beat. I loved the way the cloud looked from above them. They looked like colored Balls of cotton. I'm sorry that your daughter had such a fright, I hope she is feeling less shaken. [cegypt01]
I am still waiting to hear if she made it home okay today. [jillhill]
I am not scared of flying and I don't think I will be, though I never flew a plane with a mishap. I just watched the movie "The Spirit of St. Louis", which is about Charles Lindbergh flying over the Alantic ocean to Paris. It is a real good movie starring James Stewart. You should watch it. [megaalgos]
You are right.....I should watch it! [jillhill]
As long as I"m not being shot at. This is from my army days. [General_Spacey]
I can totally see your point of view! [jillhill]
I don't fear flying and I but love traveling! Though for long flights, I try to keep myself distracted with my IPOD, or magazines. [incredibleDNA]
happy I have never flown but I do look forward to going one day. I do not know how I am going to feel about it. It may be something that I only do once in my life. I will try it at least once. [eaforeman6]
Truthfully I love it! [jillhill]
I used to. I was convinced that if I got on a plane it will crash. And it wouldn't be fair to all the others. Well ,I now can fly. What happened? Why the change? I was ready to die if I had to on my first flight. I thought, okay ,kill me now ,I don't care. But I didn't die obviously.. It didn't crash and it was okay. But I am weird,I love turbulence.I rather feel the plane moving than nothing. [sarahruthbeth22]
My first flight I wasn't scared or nervous, I was ready for the plane to crash. [sarahruthbeth22]
I just took my first plane ride this weekend, and I wasn't scared at all. i think its pretty exciting. We even had a rough landing when the pilot didn't bring the plane down level and we were thrown around quite a bit as we hit the runway. The only thing I didn't like was that my ears got plugged up for hours when we landed, because of the pressure change. [connierebel]
THat is one of the draw backs of flying! [jillhill]
I have never really been on a plane, helicopter or any other flying device. I don't travel too much and have little opportunity to leave my hometown. However, whenever I think about the possibility I am a little scared. I know that actor Ben Affleck feels the same way. The idea that something so huge as an airplane can fly in the air still boggles my mind! A friend once took a plane. They encountered a storm and then hit an air pocket. It scared him pretty badly. Yet he still flies every once in a while! [threnos]
It's just a bump in the road! [jillhill]
I've flown on planes quite a few times. When I was a kid, I didn't mind it, I guess I never really comprehended what was happening. These days I can get a little nervouse about flying, but it doesn't keep me from traveling. [megumiart]
Me either...just got back from New York.. [jillhill]
I'm also doing travel with airplane once every year to visit my other family who was spread out at some region in indonesia... To be honestly, yes, sometimes i do afraid of being in airplane. Especially when its take-off and landing... Anything could happens... But i always try not to think bad things in airplane... [Bloggership]
I am not afraid either.....I think it's just the luck of the draw if something goes wrong. [jillhill]
I am not afraid of flying. If I do not eat properly and well prepared myself before flying, I will have air sickness. It happens to me couple times, and I really hate that. [minhminh0604]
My granddaughter is that way! [jillhill]
Yesm he firswttime I travelled by plane -actually on the returnjourney from Holland - the landing gear did not g down and we had to land on foam and go down a chute. but as was only 18 I thought that it was exciting and it did not scare me.I've had a few bumpy rided since then but I usually pray. even of the captain has the plane on auto and is fasr asleep over the atlantic - I am praying. I vividly remember one awful plane ride to Cuba on cubano airlines. whent they came out of the pilots cabin smoking I thought that we werte going down as they were having a last cigarette. I really did not know that it was the norm. So I started praying the Rosary and was so surprised at how many passengers joined in. That was definitely the worst flight for me. [cynthiann]
That would be scary! [jillhill]
When I was on my second flight ever it was a rough trip. I was 19 years old heading off to Tunisia for a week. The plane flew to Sfax via Tunis. There was much turbulence and I had coffee spilled over me. I was sick on landing and whilst descending I got severe ear pain. I was boarding a plane in Asia some years later and a member of cabin crew was handing everyone a newspaper. The front page story was a concord crash and photos were included. Oh my! I thought and I felt so nervous on that trip. I was so grateful when a friend gave me a pair of ear planes to try out. They are small plastic screw like things that I place into my ears. They stop all the ear pain because the regulate the pressure changes. I am sorry that your daughter has such a scary plane ride. It seems many planes need extra maintenance and more regular testing. Lately there have been some mishaps in the air and sadly a few plane crashes. I will continue to fly on planes because I am a keen traveler. The countries I wish to go to are all far away. [maximax8]
I also love traveling and won't stop flying..if your number is up...it's up...no matter where you are! [jillhill]
I don't like flying because it will make my ear hurt really bad. Until now I cannot get used to flying, even though I've been flying for a few times. I never encounter mishap, but once I have to wait for 4 hours because the flight was delay and I pity my brother because he had to wait for a very long time, and secondly, when the flight about to take off, there are some passenger sick, so we have to wait until the matter is settle. That's about it for my experience. i don't know how can I able to prepare myself for a long hour of flight even it two hours flight has already make my ear and face feel really painful. [ucue2008]
You should chew gum when you fly.....it equalizes the pressure! [jillhill]
Before I had my kids I was not afraid to fly. I was nervous a bit but I had the "what could happen" sort of thinking. Now expecially because I have my kids with me when I fly I am scared. Not that I would not fly but I just have that fear that something might go wrong. [violeta_va]
I know the feeling! [jillhill]
i am scared because i have had a lot of nightmares (That felt more like the dreams i have that have came true) that im in a plane crash and for awhile every time i had a dream like that i would wake up and turn on the news to see that one had crashed! i havent really had any bad experiences on a plane the few times i have flown but still im too psychic on some things to where i can just ignore it fully [moonlitmagikchild]
Wow! That would be scary to have premonitions....I would be hesitant too! [jillhill]
I love to travel and yes I do take the plane, nah, I really am not afraid of flying although I have never had a close encounter with any plane mishap. Although of course there is always that possibility, so whenever I fly I say a prayer for my safe journey. That's all I can really do, it's all in the Lord's hands. [chaime]
haha guess i am not the non flying dutchman dennis berkamp yea lol [Sir_bobby88]
Hi jill. I wouldn't say that I'm afraid to fly, I just haven't had much opportunity to do so. LOL The only time I've flown was on a trip to Disneyland when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My mom was terrified, but I believe it was my grandmother (my mom's mother) that somehow convinced my mother to fly anyway, seeing as I wanted to fly so badly. LOL I don't recall there being any mishaps, but I do remember that my ear popped something awful on the trip back that it kind of ruined the experience for me. Ouch! But I'd do it again if I got the chance. I'd just make sure to have some chewing gum on hand for the trip! wink [sacmom]
