Karlov Bridge is considered to be one of the most famous historical objects in the capital of Czech Republic. It was built according to the drafts of the famous architect Petr Palerj. The date of its foundation is the 9th of July 1357. If you pay attention to the date you will realize that it is formed from the odd numbers putted in the order of increasing and decreasing: 1 3 5 7 9 7 5 3 1. It was founded by the king of Czech Lands Karl the IV. The date of the foundation was chosen by mathematicians and astrologists of the king’s court. The date is considered to be successful because if you follow the number’s order the mirror law of the number becomes valid and the magic pyramid with the 9 at its top can be formed. It took more than 100 years to build the bridge and it was finished only at the end of the 15th century. There is a legend which tells that during the bridge construction Karl the IV issued an order for all citizens to send eggs to the capital. Eggs were used in order to fasten the mortar for stone and sandy blocks, which constituted the bridge. Unfortunately not all of the citizens understood the order properly. There are notes that prove some of the citizens brought that were already boiled. Builders and servants laughed and irritated.

From the 14th century Karlov Bridge has been considered as the center of the city, the link between the Old Town and the Lesser Town with Prague Castle. From the end of the 17th century many statues were constructed on the bridge. Now there are 30 of them. Each statue has its own legend. The most famous sculpture is the bronze statue of Jan Nepomucky, who was the private confessor of the queen. One of the legends tells how he received the status of Holy Martyr. The king did not trust his wife so he wanted the confessor to tell him the truth. The confessor did not deliver up the queen’s secret and was thrown from Karlov Bridge. When the body was caught out by the peasants they saw golden stars shining over his head; since than all sculptors depict him with 5 stars over his head. People believe if you make a wish, than flatter the dog and than touch the image under the statue your wish will come true. One more famous sculpture is the statue of knight Bruncwick, which was constructed on one of the bridgeheads. The legend tells about the young man, who was traveling around the world in search of justice and helped the king to release his beautiful daughter. To show his gratitude the king offered the youth to marry the released girl. When Bruncwick denied the offer explaining that his beloved girl was waiting for him in Prague, the king became angry and imprisoned the knight. Thanks to the father’s gift – the magic sword the knight freed himself and came back to Prague. Since those times the magic sword concealed into the bridge base guards the Prague against misfortunes.
