The night view of the Prague Castle is considered to be the most amazing sight in Prague. Adorned with the festive lights the hill with the St. Vite’s Cathedral, fortification wall and administrative buildings rising above it is the visiting-card of the city. This view is recognized by everyone, even those who have never been to Prague.
Stone fortification wall, which surrounds the fortress, was built at the beginning of 12th century. You can still find the wall fortifications that belong to those times. From the beginning of its existence the Prague Castle has served as the residence of Czech rulers, who were making it more festive, comfortable and fortified.
Prague had changed its face for several times, in order to fit its owners. The St. Vite’s Cathedral is the pearl of Prague Castle. It is the spiritual center of Catholicism in Czech Republic. The cathedral was founded in1344 during the governing of Emperor Karl the IV at the place of the old roman basilica which held the name of St. Vite and was under construction for more than 6 years. Nowadays the cathedral is the textbook of architecture because it represents various architectural styles.
Baroque basilica of St. George is also the center of tourist’s pilgrimage. It was built on the times of governing of Czech king Vratislav I in 920 B.C. The relic of St. Ludmila – the patron of Czech Republic is kept in the basilica. St. Ludmila was smothered by her daughter–in–law who argued with her because of the influence on her son, the future king of Czech Republic – Wenceslas I.
While walking around the Prague Castle don’t forget to visit the famous Golden Street, which is situated behind the basilica of St. George. Small colorful fairy-tale buildings and cobble-stone road makes the street notable among all the others. According to the legend alchemists lived here trying to find gold for king Rudolf II. Also there lived people who served in the castle and the archers. At the beginning of 20th century Prague bohemia lived here, for example Franz Kafka. Nowadays there is situated souvenir market and also the gallery, where you can see the ancient knight’s armours , women dresses and even shoot from the arbalest.
Area of Loretta built by the project of architect Dincenhoffer is the pride of Prague Castle. Special fame is won by the saint hut with the silver alter and the statue of Our Loretan Lady , the wall-painting , the plastic art and the relieves from Our Lady’s life. Nerudova Street will take you from Prague Castle down to the Karlov Bridge. In medieval times it was part of the road, where all Czech kings who came to the throne had to walk. It is named after the famous Czech poet Jan Neruda, who lived in 19th century.
