Vysehrad Hill is considered to be the most amazing and enigmatic place on the territory of Prague. It is situated over the Vltava River. According to the legend the roots of Prague history lay right in this place. It is high probable that the fortress was founded in the 1Oth century as the second king kremlin. For a long period of time the fortress was used as a major residence of the ruling dynasty of Premyslovcy. Prince Vratislav is considered to be the first owner of the Vysehrad. From the preserved proofs of those times it was observed that he transferred the city capital from Prague Kremlin to the fortified hill over the Vltava River. The main buildings in the fortress were founded in that time: St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Cathedral, king’s castle in roman style and fortifications. In 12th century Vysehrad lost its state importance, the king’s residence was transferred to Prague Citadel, and for a long time it remained the residence of the main church representative. During the ruling of famous Karl the 4th the Vysehrad fortification was in its flourishing, the ancient constructions were fortified and new fortifications were built. Czech king, proud of his lineage created Coronation code of Czech kings and issued the order for each future king to visit Vysehrad the day before his coronation.. The position of king’s city Karl the 4th registered in legal form: in “Coronation code” he included the chapter, according to which the coronation process should have started in Vysehrad, varnish boots and bag – symbols of the dynasty founder had to be kept here as well.

Next reconstruction took place only in 17th century, after the order of King Ferdinand the 3rd. The fortifications could not hold the artillery bombardment during the 30 years War and after their fortifying Vysehrad became strong fortress unachievable for the enemies. At the end of 19th century the hill received the status of king’s district of Prague, huge and beautiful park was laid out on the territory of architectural complex . St. Martin’s rotunda is one of the oldest buildings. It was built in 11th century. Nowadays Vysehrad is one of the most beloved places of tourists and local citizens. Parks and paths, an enchanting view of the city can not leave anyone careless. Cemetery Slavin is one of the most famous sightseeing of Vysehrad. Many outstanding Czech writers, composers, actors, directors, choreographs, politicians and scientists are buried there. Due to the gravestones and stone sculptures the cemetery forms a rich gallery of Czech applied crafts. Composers such as B. Smetana, A. Dvorak, Z. Fibih are buried there as well as writers and poets: B. Nemcova, J.Neruda, K. Chapek and scientists: J. E. Purkyne, F. Krizek and others. The most convenient way to get there is by metro. You have to get to the red line metro station called Vysehrad and go down through the district to the fortress. Your way will go through two famous Prague hotels: Corinthia Panorama **** hotel, Milevska 7, Prague and Corinthia Towers ***** Hotel, Kongresova 1, Prague. Those hotels are most popular among business visitors, who prefer comfort, tranquility and location close to the center.
