The district of New Town is inseparably connected with Czech History and Czech King Karl the IV. During the expansion of Prague royal districts, such as Hradchany, Prague Castle and Old town the ruler ordered to found one more district, where less wealthy aristocracy and nobility would live. Originally New Town was surrounded by high city walls, with 4 stone towers and wide gates. The square with the big marketplace formed the shops were built.
The central cathedral in 14th, 15th and 16th centuries was the Monastery on Slovany, where Karel the Great situated wealthy and powerful order of Benedicts. In 1419 son of Karel the IV – Wenceslas the II founded in new town city soviet, where were included people who fighter against Hussite movement, that started to arise in those time.
In 1784 New Town was consolidated together with other districts into the city of Prague.
