Karlovy Vary is one of the most famous spa resorts in the world. Here, 120 km away from Prague – unite history and contemporaneity, magnificent nature landscapes, miraculous mineral water, fresh air and good mood. Its history begins in early 14th century; local citizens like to tell the legend about Karl the IV, who during the deer hunting, wounded his leg and decided bathes the wound in the stream of warm water. Medicinal water repressed the pain and healed the wound. In order to express his gratitude the king founded the city here. We don’t know whether the legend is true, but in 1325 here raised small settlement called Vary, near which Karl IV the great built small hunting castle.
At the end of 14th century Karlovy Vary received the status of independent city and in 16th century the resort history of the city began. In 1520 first spa resort buildings were built and small sanatoriums and pensions around the market square. After the end of Thirty – year War the spa resort started to develop intensively, lots of patients and tourists started to come, the industry received its progress.
In 18th century famous doctors and scientists came to the city to start examine medicinal qualities of mineral water. That increased the fame even more. In those times notions of medical treatments differed a lot from the contemporary one and the doctors recommended their patients to drink up to 8 liters of hot water each day or spend 6-8 hours in a bath filled with mineral water. The skin started to chap and it was considered that disease comes out of the organism. Those methods were very popular in Europe and were called humoral therapy.
Nowadays the city is modern luxurious spa resort, with lots of hotels, sanatoriums, restaurants. The area with the hotels is quite small and locates on the intersection of two rivers – Tepla and Ogrje. The colonnades attracted with their beauty, under roots the patients can hid from the rain, the most famous one is called Geyser Collonad.
