Can someone explain to me please why it is that the person in the car behind that is so anxious to overtake does so only to turn off the road 100 yards later?

Yes I have always wonder why it was so important to nearly run you off the road to get ahead of you to just turn at the next corner. Stupidity I think, road hog have to be ahead of everyone else. Unless there is a dire emergency at home what is it going to take them another couple seconds to get to that corner. [bdugas]
I think that they take leave of their senses temporarily. [p1kef1sh]
Mostly it's to show you that not only are they stupid, but they don't know how to use their turn signal either, to let you know that they're turning. Let it be a surprise, right? Maybe they have a lawyer on retainer for whiplash lawsuits, you never know. And, if you happen to live near a highway, they probably want to show you, however briefly, that they CAN drive faster than they did on the highway when they were front of you. I've often been tempted to follow them to their destination, only to ask, "What the hell did you do that for???" But then I remember Ron White's (comedian) words, "You can't fix stupid", and I decide against it.... [catdla1]
Yip. You can't fix stupid! [p1kef1sh]
They are in a hurry to go nowhere. I don't understand this, either. It was so nice to find that when I moved, I landed in a town that doesn't seem to have people like that. They even allow 6 feet or more of space between cars when stopped at a light! I think that we are so rushed these days that people think getting anywhere they are going is almost an emergency. Yet, when faced with a real emergency they don't recognize the need to hurry. [dragon54u]
The Boss often says "Are you an emergency service?" as they speed by!! [p1kef1sh]
Wow if you figure that one out please let me know. It happens all the time here where I live. I think they just have no patience either that or want to show off that they can drive fast or have a nice car. Thats all I can think of. [caroll30]
It's an irrational impatience. I know that. [p1kef1sh]
First, I'd ask : were you doing the posted speed limit? If yes, then it's a case of stupid jerk syndrome. Now if you were NOT doing the posted speed limit, I understand the passer, because I am one in that instance. Where we live is rather rural, and there is only one major thoroughfare. The posted limit on this road is 45 in most spots but 55 in the wide open spots. Inevitably, I get behind the putz doing 35 on for the duration of the drive into town. I pass them when I am legally able, but have on occasion passed when I should not have. Go the speed limit, not under it, and most folks will do the same. What about the "kids" on crotch rockets that blow by you BETWEEN vehicles waiting for a light, or passing you on the shoulder? Death wish? [JodiLynn]
If anything I was exceeding the speed limit. The overtaker was in a 4x4 (off roader) and sped up behind me and couldn't wait to get past before slamming on the brakes and turning off! Yep - kids that come up your inside etc. Crazy. [p1kef1sh]
Oh my goodness yes there are so many ridiculous drivers! They are impatient and careless and senseless. Just last week I was driving home and some man was speeding so fast he must have been driving over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. Not only was he driving much too fast, he was also Weaving in and out of lanes to pass people... Well, needless to say, a few miles up the road when I ran into some traffic, there he was. He hadn't gotten much further. He was literally just one or two cars ahead of me. All that riskiness just to get a car ahead of someone? One wrong move or someone else not paying attention, and that could have had tragic consequences! People are so ridiculous! [Bethany1202]
I often think that they must have money to burn on gas. In Germany a few years ago I saw one guy get his comeuppance though. It was snowing heavily and we were all in the same lane driving along two black lines in the snow very slowly. A guy came up on the inside going very fast. A mile or so later he has stopped. he had driven straight into a pile of snow that a snowplow had left! Worse yet, he was carrying one of those auto trailers and it had wreaked and spilled all over. [p1kef1sh]
I think it must be that the driver or one of his passengers has been on the road a long time and may be so close to home that their respectives bodies have decided that it is time to go take a ...ahhh...it's time to potty. Because that could only be the rationale I can think of for this. Another is the usually guy, that just cannot stand following and blows by you like you are standing still, only to be stuck at a traffic light WITH YOU, only a few miles/kilometers ahead of where they just "HAD" to pass you. Usually they're driving one of those cheap import cars. [BCMike]
Over here, we have many coffee places that have drive through capability, so you can get your 'fix' anywhere. I suspect you Brits have "TAKE-AWAY" coffee joints too don't you? I wonder why you folks talk ingliish funny like that? [BCMike]
Hi P1key! I think that people do it because they have a death wish...And of course they are incredibly selfish & stupid plain and simple! There is really no rhyme or reason to do such a thing and the worst part about it is they put everyone else that is on the road in serious danger! Those type of people do all sorts of other stupid things like take off from a red light and "gun it" to get to the next red light, I always say that they are, "hurrying up so that they can stop at the next light", because inevitably that is exactly what happens!! You won't find commercial trucks doing stupid things like that. They can't speed up quickly, nor do they drive recklessly! People can do some incredibly stupid things when they are driving and with people like this, I Know that they had to have gotten their license out of a Cracker Jacks box!! ninja [greeneyedlady]
I couldn't agree with you more P1key! I thought when you got a drivers license it was to drive and Not to have an effect on the brain that made it become mushy and stupid! ninja [greeneyedlady]
Oh yes, there are alot of drivers on our roads that are like that, even in a speed limit they try to over take as they can not wait.If i have someone driving like that right behind me i tend to slow down, just incase they over take and cause a crash.I find that it is not only the younger drivers that do that either some of them should not be on the road.Happy Mylotting. [jugsjugs]
I find that older drivers are often the worst. Younger ones can be mad at times, but they don't have that "I've been driving before you were born" type of arrogance. [p1kef1sh]
Its a crazy world and even crazier roads to drive on..lol..I have had this happen to me more the once and beeped my horn at them only to get the finger back..lol...Raod road in its meanest form...lolglare [PoetryPose]
Over here you are sometimes lucky to get the finger. People have been killed for that!! [p1kef1sh]
It's their primal desire to try and maximise the slingshot effect I think. The problem though is that because we get in the way, they never get to pull it off properly. sad I still prefer these kinds of people to the ones that start indicating some 10 kilometres before they're actually going to make a turn. thumbdown [James72]
Did he even use a slingshot though? I reckon it was a rohypnol spiking incident that was covered up. confused [James72]
Or they do so only to get stuck at the same red light that you get stuck at. Some people are just impatient and there's no logic to it. [dawnald]
You too? Sometimes I even laugh and call them idiots right out loud! :-) [dawnald]
Hi p!key, These sort of people are the real nutters who can cause accidents, I can never understand what is the point of trying to overtake, they are going to get there anyway, my step-father always used to say of these people who overtake and speeds, "Better to be late than DEAD on time" how true that is. You'll end up late if you wreak your car and have to call the towing trucks to haul it away. Hugs. Tamara xxxx [tamarafireheart]
He is right too Tamara. XXXX [p1kef1sh]
Lol maybe they have to go to the bathroom really really bad lol. Hell who knows, they are nothing but idiots who do that. Though ive probably done it in the past so im sure im an idiot too lol. [darkjedi1]
Lol yeah I know, hell the only one I trust is myself and my car lol. [darkjedi1]
I don't do this sort of thing. I drive in the passing lane almost doubling the speed limit then zip over in the right lane to take my exit about 20 feet before I need to exit. But I find it almost impossible to drive in the right hand lane. People there follow the speed limit signs. [cynicalandoutspoken]
Most of the world drive on the right, Pike. I think it's only us (British and Irish), Australia and some random country like Luxembourg or somewhere who drive on the left! [pumpkinjam]
Hi ya p1kef1sh Boy is it annoying when people do that? I hate it when they over take and then pull infront of you and then cut their speed making you do the same!! Or when you are like on the road that has an overtaking lane for a while and you are just about to pull out to overtake a slow moving vehicle and then someone comes up behind overtaking you who then takes forever to overtake the slow vehicle in front and then you run out of road yourself to overtake!! Grrrrrr angry Whinge over!! LOL [Humbug25]
Sounds like the voice of experience there Humbug. Blooming annoying isn't it? [p1kef1sh]
Because they are hoons and can't help themselves. My husband's grandpa was a farmer out in the central west - the neighbours were miles away, but whenever Pa got out on the road and spotted dust up ahead, he HAD to overtake them, no matter how far away they were! He also used to accuse his neighbours of sneaking over in the night and draining the water out of his radiator - bwahahaa! (Digression.) There's no accounting for how people's brains work. [guybrush]
LOL. I try not to let my brain work. Does odd things to me! [p1kef1sh]
I hate it when they do that! and even more when they go zooming past just to slam on their brakes and turn like they are on ICE! [ElicBxn]
yeah, they go flying past like they are in the Indi 500, then come to an almost complete stop to turn! [ElicBxn]
Grrrr. that gets on my last nerve when people drive like that and do that to me. I have no idea what their dang hurry is. I think they just hate to ride behind someone else. [stephcjh]
I think so too Steph. When they do that I sometimes wish there was a cop close by to catch them. [p1kef1sh]
It's because they want to spend as much time as possible up your arse before they have to piss off angry It still shocks me how impatient drivers are with me when I'm having a lesson - I'm a learner, do they not realise that by getting annoyed at me and driving up my rear-end they're going to cause an accident one day? confused [LilyLoretta]
I heard on the radio the other day that there was a learner on a motorway (I don't know what they were doing there, I can only assume they'd taken a wrong turning on a roundabout) Anyway, there were L-plates on the car so clearly it was a learner. Apparently, the learner had a bit of trouble when leaving the motorway and a driver behind her shouted "Why don't you learn to drive?!". I've had people right up my backside and people beeping at me when they've been in the wrong. I know no one is a perfect driver and sometimes the mistakes have been my fault but I've found that hardly anyone has any patience on the roads. Of course, we'd probably all rather the roads were clear and we were the only one on them and we'll get annoyed in queues but there's no need to get aggressive about it. [pumpkinjam]
It's simple. They don't have a life. They probably don't drink or smoke, and they don't do drugs. Therefore, the only thing they can do is drive aggresively and endanger the public. Guess we'll have to hire some more cops to work traffic, and start arresting good Christians that can't seem to utilize a little self-control when they get behind the wheel. Hope that helps, Dan [keymandan]
Of course, pumpkinjam, there are lots of people who are responsible drivers, like those people with horse drawn vehicles or carriers! LOL. Congratulations on being legal to drive. My point was simply that I've seen a lot of cases where so called "Christians" took out their frustrations behind the wheel instead of in personal habits. You might say I was poking at them just a bit. I want them to realize the responsibility of moving a vehicle 60 miles an hour down the road. It's not just quick reactions. It's not just being attentive. It's not just using turn signals. It's the guy, or the gal, or the child in the other vehicle who really matter. If they truly care for them, they will be obedient to the rules of the road. May you fare thee well, Dan [keymandan]
Now that sounds like my step father..lol always in a hurry and likes to go around people when it is not to safe. He scares the hibby gibbies out of us 90% of the time. [mtdewgurl74]
Just keep him over there Becky. There are plenty enough here already! [p1kef1sh]
Probably for the same reason as people were overtaking me on a country lane when there was a horse in front of me. That is because they are ignorant, moronic, stupid, whatever else. Did I tell you I got a car now? Anyway, the other day, I was driving up a country lane with a 60mph limit. As there was a horse in front of me, I was driving at around 35-40mph with the intention of overtaking the horse. Two drivers overtook me and sped past the horse. Luckily, the horse wasn't bothered but I wonder sometimes what people are thinking when someone drives more slowly in front of them. Does it not occur to them that there might be a reason for you not driving dead on the speed limit? I've known people overtake others only to find themselves unable to get back in lane. Anyway, that's slighlty in a different direction. I have also seen people overtake and turn not long after. I would think that would be quite dangerous and stupid and a bit pointless. I think some people just think that they need to be everywhere before everone else. [pumpkinjam]
You have a car now Pumpkin. You didn't tell me! But I want to hear all about it. Where have you been etc etc. People don't seem to understand that horses and car don't mix well. I always give them a very wide berth and drive at an almost standstill. [p1kef1sh]
Hmmm I will say I've passed a car and turned off aboutl half a mile later - ususally this is only if the person is going half the speed limit and driving me wacko. OR if i realize that i wanted to stop at my moms before going home and the driveway is right there. [saundyl]
Oh i will...and if i miss ya i'll back up and say hi! [saundyl]
Maybe if the person in front wasn't so slow, they could have overtaken them sooner and made the turn off 200 yards later. Just sayin'... [Ldyjarhead]
Maybe if we all slowed up a bit there would be less anger in the world? Got to say that if I know that I am turning off I tuck in behind the slow guy and potter to my exit. No sense in causing an accident just because of my impatience. [p1kef1sh]
I don't believe they are actually in a hurry, I think it just makes them feel important to have strangers in another car THINK that they are a busy and important person. Its the same with the people who pass you, only to stay 10 yrds ahead of you for the next hour. They just couldn't handle not being first. Never understood it, never will. [madasp]
I know exactly what you mean. Thank you. [p1kef1sh]
