If you going to a place the first time do you take a map or seek directions from friends or relatives if you don't know where the place is? It happened to me last week, I had to go to a place which I did not know where it is even in our small island and I had to ask my friends for directions. © ronaldinu 2008

I usually print out a map and get a cell phone number in case I get lost. I find that often Internet directions are more accurate than a friend or acquaintance's verbal directions; after all, they know the are and you do not. Of course, a lot of cellular phones have GPS capabilities now, which would make it a lot harder to get lost. [writerdave]
i look it up online and HOPE that the site is correct!! anytime i get verbal directions from others i never find anything since they will have areas they use in their memory to find their way and i would drive right past it and never see them [moonlitmagikchild]
happyHi It depends on situation. If it is something I don't know a street or a location on my town, I will ask my friends if they know the location, but if it is about a foreign country or town I will use my GPS, very good instrument to get the good direction. I used it every time I was abroad and functioned perfectly. So you don't need to ask people on the street especially when you are in foreign country and people don't know english very well. happy [anirc750310]
I prefer having a map before going to the place so I can plan how to get there. What upsets me is when some streets might not have signs like what street it is. Even if I've a map but then I'm not sure of where to go, I'll ask for directions already so that I won't get really lost. happy [EnslinPorter]
I usually find and print the directions of the internet. (The internet comes in handy), I take my cell phone so that I can call if I need more information. [Chevee]
Hi there ronaldinu If I have never been somewhere before I will always get directions and read them several times before I go. I then try and write them out as simply as possible so that I can take quick looks at them if I need to . My eldest always sits in the front and helps if he can but although his reading is quite good it isn't good enough for road directions! [Humbug25]
Normally I would consult a map because that will help me to get from A to B however when you are driving on your own the last thing you can do is have a map in front of you!!! So I usually ask family or friends for direction and hopefully try and remember it in my head, or I'll write it down memorize it and then pull over in the car and memorize the next part of the journey! I hate getting lost whilst driving! [wolfie34]
I have a map of my local area and another map of my surrounding area. I take them when I am going to a new location. If I am very unsure I look up a location on the Internet. I am very keen on traveling and in my travel guide book there is usually a map of each major city showing accommodation, sights and useful buildings like a central post office. I find the maps useful and in a smaller city I often get a map from the Tourist Information. I have had difficulty with finding my way around in Bulgaria because my map was in English and the street names were in Bulgarian. I got really lost and it was helpful when I found someone that spoke English. I also got lost in Estonia because most street names were not marked. I had an excellent map but with unmarked streets I had a hopeless time finding my accommodation. My son's pushchair was dropping to bits and I felt upset as well as confused. A local lady kindly helped me find the guest house and that was challenging. I asked a local lady with a child where I might be able to purchase a new pushchair. It was a bit easier walking back into town and I did manage to buy a new pushchair then return to the guest house. [maximax8]
Hi ronald, I will be sking for some guide and directions too and when I will arrive in the place, will stop by and ask from people but I will also choose whom to ask, I will only rely in my observation and vibration of people since I hate also to be scam!LOL!happyhappyhappy [checapricorn]
I will going to another province next week for the first time. I will be staying there for 6 weeks. I am going with someone and we will be met at the airport on arrival day so we will not get lost or something. After that, we're on our own. i'll just take note of streets and landmarks of the places. Then I will ask for directions from host family and the people we will meet. usually, provinces that are not highly urbanized don't have maps with street names and all. It's very common in the Philippines not to rely on maps. And my going there involves map making in communities. [sandymay16]
I remember, I bought a map when I went to a new place with my friends. But at the same time, we also asked for directions from the people there just to be sure especially for specific places. happy [iamcdy]
I am not too good with maps.. I will ask for directions. I will also have someone print out the directions for me from a computer.. These directions seem to be more easier to understand than a road map. I also will stop by a local gas station for directions as well. And I will ask someone who is nearby for directions too.happyhappy [cream97]
I always go online and use either mapquest, mapblast or AAA to get directions. I do not like getting lost or being late because I didn't know where to go. This usually works great for me. [annkenline]
I do my search on Google map and I print my directions. I never have problem finding my destination with Google map. [polachicago]
I love going to places for the first time. It's exciting and a little scary but that's what makes it so much fun! Well, I usually just ask for directions. And fortunately, I always find my way. ;D [divinegwapa]
i definitely check for directions if i'm going to a place for the first time. i don't like the feeling of getting lost. it's a waste of time and effort. most importantly, this can be prevented just by checking out the directions. i recently got a mobile phone that has a map of my country. with that, at least i won't get lost when i'm going somewhere. cheers [applefreak]
We usually go to map quest and get explecite direction. It tells us turn for turn how to go. [moondancer]
Hi ronaldinu, I don't really need any map and things like that because I don't go any where much, but if I was to go some place, I usually go with some one who knows where they are going. Tamara [tamarafireheart]
if i was going somewhere i had never been i would sure seek directions. [ANTIQUELADY]
Hi Ronald..if I am not sure about going to a place for the first time on my journey I prefer to ask the train person or busdriver as they would know where to go or what times buses and trains go and where to etc...littleowl [littleowl]
Before I owned a GPS and there were on line directions and maps, I used to get directions from someone, then map it out on my map. Once online help was available, I would get directions in advance but also on line, still using a map for back up. Now I use my GPS but STILL get directions from the person or place that I am visiting, and STILL bring a map along, as even a GPS can be wrong, every now and then. [nanajanet]
Most times, when I'm going to a place for the first time, I will mapquest it for directions. I still ask neighbors and friends, cause alot of times mapquest has you going out of the way. I always look for the shortest distance, especially with the gas prices today. [SuzyQ12]
I look at a map before leaving (google) and then get there, I can't ask for direction on the bus or walking. [ShellyB]
Hi. I couldn't read or understand a road map to save my life. I will ask friends for directions, strangers, anyone that I think can help me. I'm a woman, so I am not to proud or stubborn to do so. (smile) But of course I try to find out exactly where I'm going before I even go out the door. If I am in my city, Chicago, IL, and going to ride public transportation, I call CTA Travel Information. They have been getting me around my city for over 30 years. [ReoTwo]
if we are going somewhere away from my place we use navigation system.Germany is too big. not easy to find the place where you aiming to go. [bombshell]
Yeah, if I've never been there before, I almost always get directions first. I get online and get the directions, to make sure I don't get myself lost, I also take an Atlas with me. I don't like having to stop and ask for directions...lol. [walijo2008]
if it's for a vacation, i do my itinerary and research. if it's to look for a relative, i ask my relatives then the neighbors. if it's somewhere in manila, i ask for an accompany. hehe. [duke_31]
I usually like to look it up on the Internet and write it all down. That works pretty well for me and makes me feel very smart and efficient. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija [kellyjeanne]
well, i experience before.... I think it should be 1 years ago.... we have 1 group go to island for travel.... I'm the person who looking for map... well, although have map, you will get lost too because you never been there.... so, when we arrive there, we have someone to guide us... and we also ask around when we are there.... [candysky]
i'm a person who is always confused with directions, a map is no use for me. even if i ask my friend the direction, i'll forget as soon as i turn around. really a big problem for me~till now i still cannot go far alone unless someone is by my side~ [tanstar]
I use mapquest.com to give me directions to where I am going also a atlas book. I will ask for directions from family but always get the directions from mapquest.com also so I can print them off with a map of the area I am going so I won't get lost. [mtdewgurl74]
I take a map but I dont depend on it solely when in doubt I seek directions noone knows better where things are than a local [zukepr]
i travel quite a lot but am not good with maps so i hardly carry maps with me lest i get myself more confused but one thing i do is i try to get as many contact numbers as i can when going to a new place so i can in the case i get lost [BYOLA2871]
If travelling for an appointment or business, I always use a map, so that I'm not late. However, when on holiday, no map, no time restrictions, just me, the road and whatevr I discover. Often the most fun to have on holiday may occur in a small taverna, an off-the-high street restaurant or a lttle piazza. Amble freely, and use a taxi to find your way home. [Adrenochrome]
I take a map in general but also ask for directions. Sometimes places change with construction and detours so i need the map to see where to make the changes if they come up. Sometimes people who give me directions give me the LONG way because they dont know the short way or they think its shorter. I like to explore my options but i HATE getting lost [saundyl]
I love maps.So I usually map out the route to new places.I use both paper maps and the Net.It is fun. [sarahruthbeth22]
To me, map is actually useless because a map dun really show u the right way.. ANd most of the time, a map is more like a guideline and reference ^_^ Thus, i will rather seek direction with my frenz whom are always on the move within the country ^_^ If not, i also dun mind exploring on my own, for, it's quite fun to be in a strange and unfamiliar place in one's own country.. lol [kun2349]
I usually have with me map, but when I feel like the map is not really helping out I tend to talk to people in the place and ask for directions, asking and looking at the map are some friendly means to get to the place where you want to be. rasp [tryxiness]
I search on the net for a map over the new place. You can never be sure, that you find some people to ask, when you are searching for the right adress [ennasus59]
hi ronaldinu usually we use a planner which you can find in the internet and print it out. Thats the best way to know the directions as I dont want to buy a computer navigation system yet. They are too expensive. [book1962]
I do both, some maps are hard to describe when you are seeing the real structure [Mikaela_taz25]
It depends on where I am going and who is giving the directions. I sometimes am not comfortable with the directions that some people give me so I will look them up on my own. I have a wonderful street guide for the city that I bought when my son and his girlfriend were looking for a place, and I use it often. If I have time, I will go online and get directions, since they have always been very good for me. I have gotten as far as 12 hours away with no problems using online directions. [idowrite72]
We've been to many new places and before going there we google the map and printed it out. When we took a week vacation in another state my brother in law has GPS so we never got lost everytime we went somewhere. Its fun talking to it.It gives the right direction. [msedge]
