With the way prices are rocketing this year it looks like we won't be having much of a holiday this time around. Petrol prices going up mean that we won't be able to do nearly as much touring as we have done before and we certainly can't afford to jet off somewhere foreign and exotic, staying in a fancy hotel on a beach.
My partner and I usually throw our camping gear into the car and take off where we fancy for a few days, in the past we have either gone to Cornwall and the West Country in the UK, or we will book a very cheap B & B in Whitby for the Goth Fest in the Autumn. But this year it looks highly unlikely we will be able to do much for a holiday other than maybe a couple of odd weekends away with the tent.
What are you going to do this year? A couple of weeks in an expensive hotel? A beach holiday? Disneyland? or a wet weekend in a tent.

I am fortunate enough to be able to afford to go down to my retreat by the sea in Dorset UK, I have already booked 10 days (booked last November) in August. Because I go there so often I have become friendly with the guy who runs it so I get a discount. I go there 4/5 times a year! I am going next weekend for a break which I am looking forward to. Last year I went to Rhodes for two weeks, first time I've flown on my own and it was wonderful, I won't be going abroad this year but if I had the money I would love to go to New Zealand, maybe one day my friend, but until then 10 days in Dorset suits me just fine! This brings back some memories Wolfie [recycledgoth]
I usually do lots of camping but this year im pregnant so not gonna happen lol. I aint laying on no floor for anything. [minnie_98214]
LOL - I can't say I blame you hun, go for the luxury option this time :-) [recycledgoth]
I do not camp - so I don't get away with a tent for a weekend. I'm actually not planning anything - I've got to be around for my mom - if I did do anything, I might want to slip off to Houston to see friends, but I haven't done that in years. [ElicBxn]
LOL - yup just put your feet up, chill out and relax hun, you deserve it [recycledgoth]
For many years, I have not gone for a long break away from my country. I take short breaks, often during weekends doing nothing except lazing around and playing with my nieces at my sister's house. It is a break to me as I leave everything behind except the mindset to have a good time. [whyaskq]
My partner and I are thinking more along the lines of a few short breaks this year, maybe a long weekend or two, just to chill and relax a little. Having a good time is probably the best break of all :-) [recycledgoth]
No we cant afford a holiday we are having a week at home with our children though and will take them to some fun places enjoy hopefully some sunny weather, and me and my partner have a night away planned just the two of us but even that has taken a lot of saving to be able to afford it [kezabelle]
I am shocked that the costs have risen so much now that we can't afford a week away somewhere. Having said that, even a few days out are good. Our savings are nowhere near enough to take my partner and I anywhere special :-( Have a great time with your kids hun [recycledgoth]
maybe an ozzfest if i'm lucky.. i doubt i'm gonna be able to afford travel this year, but maybe i'll luck out somewhere down the line [scarlet_woman]
Hey, maybe this year will be your year hun [recycledgoth]
I have never been able to go for a holiday or vacation. But this year I am going to Jerusalem. I am not going with my family but my sister. I have always dream of going there. [ellie26]
How lovely, I hope you have a wonderful time hun [recycledgoth]
I honestly can't remember the last time we had a holiday , we go out for a drive on a nice day and have a look at the factory shops ( like we did today ) and we all enjoy that , Mum and dad aren't fit enough to go a holiday and we have to care for them ( not a chore) , days out are nice though too xx [weemam]
Thanks pal , you too xxx [weemam]
Luckily we're what are referred to as DINKys - Double Income No Kids haha! I usually go to India for 2 weeks to see family and some shopping and exploring and do something separately with hubby as he hates going to India (as he bought up there so it's not as exciting for him). This year I don't think I'll be going to India but we are planning a week up in Scotland where we went 5 years ago before we got married - we had such a lovely time up there that we want to recreate the magic and explore more of that beautiful place. To be honest, European holidays don't appeal to me, Spain, Greece, etc. I love to explore the places in the UK where I haven't been and we can afford to stay in nice hotels and to be honest it ends up costing as much as a short foreign holiday. Am very excited about going to Scotland as we've been putting it off what with one thing and another and last year or the year before hubby and I didn't get to holiday together because we spent a good 6-8 months redecorating our home which cost over £20,000. At least we're not in debt over it and we can go on a holiday without having to count the pennies. Hubby would loving to go camping or caravaning but I've told him he has to do that with mates as I really need my creature comforts - I love to soak in luxury baths when I stay in hotels and I need a comfy bed too! x [anonymili]
well guys as a wee Scottish woman I can tell you you won't be disappointed if you come to Scotland , the air is clean the scenery spectacular and of course the people are so warm and friendly :) xx [weemam]
I like so many others will more than likely not be able to much this year for vacationing as we can not afford it. We have spoke about just packing the tent and going to the coast and camp for a weekend or so but we will not be taking our normal week long vacations. I feel sad for my young children as my older children have seen so much but my little ones are going to miss out on that as we can not afford it any longer. [cwgrlsarefun]
I can understand completely hun, our money is so tight these days too. However, I'm sure your younger children will love camping away for a few days with you guys, and who knows, they may well see a lot more as they grow. I hope you get the chance for a break hun [recycledgoth]
Normally, during this time of the year (it's summer here in my country from march-may) my family heads off to the beach or waterparks. But not this year. Aside from hiking petrol problems experienced worldwide, coupled with my country's alleged rice shortage causing hiking rice prices too, we'd be staying home for the duration of the summer. But on May, my college friends and I were invited by another college friend to go and visit their hometown in the province. It's 8 hours away by car to the north from our country's capital. The province has several historic sites like old colonial style communities, old churches, good beaches and other places for sight seeing. I've never been there before, so I'm looking forward to the trip. We'd be staying over at our friend's house so that's one less thing to worry about. Though i couldn't tag my entire family along, I'd just bring home food delicacies for them, stories and pictures too ;) [underthesun21]
That sounds like a great trip, and you will be able to save money too. It's such a shame that with all the price rises, people can't afford to take a break so much now. Have a great time [recycledgoth]
Being a broke college senior, I really can't afford much except for food and rent. However, a good budget can easily solve this when I find a job. The key to being able to afoard a vacation, whether a one day- or 10 day vaction is time and budgeting( it also helps to not have an economy in a recession). However, with a proper budget, you will be able to afford a vacations, beucase you saved for it. I hope to be able to go on a vacation by the first of 2009. Remember budget is the words-budget [jdcohen]
Good luck hun, keep saving and budgeting. I have found it very hard to save much money this year but my partner and I hope that next year we will be able to afford a proper holiday [recycledgoth]
Honestly i can't afford it for now in going some holidays! OR having fun to other place..Im just here in our house busy in mylotting. All goods, gasoline and etc are increasing.. [ozzeth]
i can perfectly understand what you mean... me and my hubby also struggle a lot to go on holiday this year... the only holiday we will go is back to our home country at the end of this year... even that, we have to struggle so much to raise the money for the ticket... it is about $1,200 per person... so it will be $2,400 for two persons... we hope that we will get quite some money from our tax return in july... [lingli_78]
money is very tight here too. last year we spent 2 nights at a motel right by the beach. we both loved it. unfortunately this year we wont be able to afford any vacation. too bad. hope u at least have fun on your short weekends away! [lorbo0618]
We're not planning much of a vacation this summer, but my fiance's sister is coming up for the weekend of his birthday, and his dad will fly out after she leaves. I don't get a lot of vacation time for work, so that affects our plans a lot more than prices. We'll just spend some time seeing the sights in Seattle with family, and call that a vacation. :) [scarywhitegirl]
well as of this year, i think i'm not gonna be able to be on vacation because of work,, that is why i am still pursuing on the online world of money making.. a little more time and im gonna have lots of money while having lots of vacatio.. well maybe you could try to visit this site for you to view the 7 min life changing movie... http://www.my.ws and the access code is markmend and let's see if you'll get interested in doing online earning...gudluck [macqueletmen29]
I spend my money for this summer's holiday about 2 years ago. My father always give me allowance money for week. But I don't use it, I save it. I hope I have enough money for this travel. [pooh08]
I doubt very much we'll be doing any week long vacations this yr which really sucks since I'm in SERIOUS need of a week or 7 or 8 away LOL...BUT I'm working on it so the kids and i can at least go away a few times here and there....When its just us, we can crash at some of my friends places etc which is cool....plus I'd like to take them camping to a few different places too! [Ravenladyj]
I will keep my fingers crossed that you get your breaks hun, at least camping can work out to be a cheap holiday. We need a really good break away now but it's not going to happen, so out comes the tent :-) [recycledgoth]
My plan for holiday abroad this year must be postponed until.. I dont know when.. apparently my husband found a small house which is not so expensive and we wanted to buy it.. So we use all our savings plus get a loan from the bank.. I am glad I finally have a house of our own.. Anyway I still can enjoy the holiday because I already live in a beautiful island, work in a resort on the beach and we can enjoy the holiday here just like the other tourist... [afternoontea]
Congratulations on getting your house. I would love to live in a lovely place rather than the city. [recycledgoth]
It's going to be staying home time for this person. There isn't enough in my budget to do anything. Normally we try to go to the beach for a weekend here and there, but not this year. My vacation is taking my mil back to erie at the beginning of May, and then bringing the bus back the next day. I would love to go to Myrtle Beach for a couple weeks, but hey a person can dream. That doesn't cost at least!! Have a good day! [PamE53]
Lat year I did not have a vacation trip at all, so this year we have booked to weeks on Crete. It did not cost much as we shopped around and did not use an agancy. We'll be leaving May 17th. I hope it will be a great vacation. We are also looking for our own place in the sun. Hopefully we'll find a plot or a small house. [teison2]
AH! A break! My last real break was many years ago. I have enjoyed all my camping trips since I love to go camping, but I am now craving for the chance of a nice vacation where I don't really have to go around doing setting up tents, cook, do the dishes etc. etc. etc. Our last camping trip was in 2002. We were away for 2 weeks and had a great time but I am in need of something else by now. Not that I am going to have it LOL but it would be nice to have a week somewhere in a nice and warm beach. A full week where all I needed to do was to relax and enjoy. No cleaning, no cooking, no washing..... I used to have that each year - often more than once - and I am really getting to the point where I miss it so much. I don't care for an expensive hotel, I don't want to visit a new busy city, all I want is a nice quiet place, right across from the beach if possible. Maybe next year though :) [arkaf61]
Hehehehe I think it's only normal to want to be a bit catered to every once in a while. Like you I love camping, but sometimes we just need the chance to rest, to relax without having to still work hard on our vacation :) [arkaf61]
With our finances being so little at this point, it is doubtful that we will even be able to afford a weekend excursion this year. Hubby is unemployed and his benefits are close to ending. This will put a huge crimp in the cash flow. Guess we will have to be happy with staying at home and using the wading pool this year. [ElusiveButterfly]
Hopefully the weather will be kind this year and the wading pool will get plenty of use hun. I hope you get the chance for a few days out. [recycledgoth]
Probably if Im gonna win a lotto I will have a vacation like that. I cant really afford to have a vacation especially this year. I have to save money for my upcoming test. [jason_co]
Yeah we usually try to take some kind of vacation every year, but with gas prices the way they are, we may not be going far. They said its supposed to get up to 4.00 a gallon by summer. I think thats what we will do, is take the tent out by the river, for the weekends. Where we live there is water all around us, we can take our pick where we want to go, hitch up the boat and take off. [walijo2008]
I haven't worked, until now, for the last 1 1/2 years so I don't need a holiday. I have only been working again for the last two weeks and I am glad to be back working again. I won't be taking a holiday this year but I will next year. Or maybe I will be able to swing a winter holiday this year. We'll see. I would like to go to Mexico or Cuba, like my mom and sisters do every year. whistle [chrislotz]
I don't think we will be able to afford an extravagant vacation this year either. We will probably make a day trip to an amusement park. [kellys3ps]
Well so far we haven't changed plans because of the gas prices so I'm hoping very much that they will drop before we have a long road trip planned in the fall. Besides that, we may take a weekend or two, but not as much as I'd like to travel. It's not just the price of gas, either... everything is going up and that probably includes hotels. It definitely includes food, unfortunately. sad [katiedoubleu]
hi 'goth-there is no way i can go on holiday this year-maybe a few days away in the uk but definitley not a holiday-littleowl [littleowl]
My husband is in the Navy and left for a seven month deployment in March. We took a family trip before he left to Monterey, California. It was about a two and a half hour drive from where we live. It was so beautiful and we had such a great time! I was excited to see the ocean again. I grew up on an ocean and have been stuck in the middle of California with no ocean. We ate lots of seafood (my favorite!) and did lots of touring. It was a nice vacation for us all to take together before he left for so long. [emma412]
If I try hard enough I may actually go on a vacation this year, my first since 3 years ago. But my mom is balking at the way airport taxes and oil prices are shooting into the universe. You never know, maybe wat I earn this year from online stuff may actually pay the airport taxes and get me somewhere lol [catmint]
This year in August my parents, brother, grandparents and I are going up to Dumfries in Scotland for a week, then on the way down, we're going to the Lake District (near Keswick) for another week. I'm not paying for that though, which makes it even more enjoyable =D [drivelikeleighu]
My partner loves the Lake District, he goes walking and climbing up there whenever he can. A free holiday too, lucky you :-) [recycledgoth]
I went on a business trip to New Orleans a couple of weeks ago that ended up costing me a LOT more than I expected (financially). First: somewhere along the line, I 'lost' (more like I believe it was stolen) $200 in cash, most likely by my roommate. Second: I then noticed that my return ticket is for April 29 and not April 6--there goes more money (the fee to exchange tickets and the additional cost). This trip was to cost about $600; it ended up costing close to $900! And then I come home to TWO bounced checks. I'm supposed to go to Savannah, GA in June; I think THAT trip is off now. Honestly, I saw gas (petrol) prices ranging from $3.25 to $3.45 (on the same road!) this morning and I think driving is the next thing to go! [scorpiobabes]
I hope so too, but it doesn't seem likely now. Oh well, maybe in another life! [scorpiobabes]
i got laid off at the end of february so i'm only getting unemployment but we are still going to disneyworld next month. my brother is getting married in GA so we are going the extra few hours away and enjoying ourselves. we deserve it. [GigglesGrobanite]
I'm thinking of just a short riding trip to Thailand to check out the latest bike parts and come back home. I have lots of riding friends in a biker group and we love to go on "convoy". The budget that we use normally aren't that much, and gas purchase is much cheaper in Thailand etc. [zed_k4]
That sounds great hun, in my long ago youth I used to hang around with the local bikers and loved the freedom we had to go where we pleased. [recycledgoth]
I love to have a break from work, but i cannot afford it. I am stuck at my work with small salary and That is my life. Thank's God i still can online at the internet at my work so i have distraction from my miss home sorrow. [diansinta]
Hi, If it was just petrol prices I'm sure we could put up with it but it's the knock on effect with certainty that everything else will rise also! Not only that our council tax, services bills and everything else has gone up too! But have our wages? Not on your Nellie.. anyway rant over in answer to your question I can't see I'll get away this year, but with any luck will be going away next year somewhere abroad hopefully - but no this year doubt it very much! [Bizziebod]
You are so right hun, the way all the prices are rocketing, it makes holidays go right to the bottom of the list. I hope you manage to have a lovely break next year hun, you deserve it happy [recycledgoth]
This month (May), me and my friends will go on vacation. We will go to a resort to spend a day or two there. I already called for a reservation for us. We rented a cottage room that has 2 queen size bed, 1 large sofa, 1 TV, ref and the room is airconditioned. It is cool and really not that expensive since me and my friends chip in for the expenses. [jesbellaine]
Yup, sure will enjoy. Can't wait for it. Thanks for the reply. Happy Mylotting! [jesbellaine]
Like you we are pretty much restricted to camping weekends. Funnily enough it costs us more to send the cats to their holiday camp than it does for us to pitch somewhere! LOL. Most of our trips are re-enactment related, but we are looking at a Dog Training course in Yorkshire - we have a rescued border collie and although he's pretty good now he still has a few issues that need expert help. If so we'll probably find a dog friendly hotel and go for a few days. Petrol prices are also an issue so we don't go too far, we know a nice, very quiet camp site in Shropshire that is clean, cheap and cheerful that we like to go to. [huswyf]
Fantastic thanks hun [recycledgoth]
This year I'm going to be far to busy to consider getting away, I'm hoping. We've got lots of plans afoot, and if we're able to get cracking on them then what we're doing at home will be too exciting to get away from anyway. We're very lucky. Where we live it's warm and sunny in the summer, and we have a river close by where we're able to swim and just relax. It's like being on holiday, but at home :-) And the only expense is the ice creams I cant do without! [GreenMoo]
i dont think i can afford a vacation this year...as how the prices are going....vacation money will probably stay on the bank....for emergency...gas is up to my neck!!! [joimarquez]
I never take vacation time. We take weekends away. We go camping about an hour away so not too much gas. We use whatever food we have in the house. Just get away for a little while. [laglen]
hi recycledgoth, how's your day? happy anyway, i think i should. i am totally burned and tired of the work. i need to refresher of life. an enjoyable break. thanks for posting and sharing this....rolleyes cheers and God bless... [delgar]
Thanks hun, take a break even if it's only a weekend. [recycledgoth]
I usually don't do anything but hang out with the kids and grandkids or maybe a weekend trip with one of them. This summer I plan to go to an email friend's wedding in Canada and spend a few days there sight-seeing while I am there. That will be in August. Then in Sept the hippo group that I belong to on yahoo is having a convention in Chicago and I would like to attend that for the weekend, although I don't know any of the others and I don't do well in that kind of setting. I am thinking seriously of going just to be going somewhere and having a vacation away from the kids and grandkids for a change. I have invited my sister to go along, since it is around her birthday, but she hasn't committed, yet. I have made that hotel reservation but not the earlier one for the wedding! [idowrite72]
I think we are going to try to go on a vacation to Florida. We really need a break, it has been awhile since we got away. Though if the gas keeps going up we may change our plans. A nice sunny beach sounds really good. [Sherry12]
I could sure do with a few days in the sunshine now hun, but gas prices are rapidly forcing us to rethink for this year [recycledgoth]
I have never been able to afford a vacation. My hubby is going to tennessee this year for the bristol race. I am extremly jealous. That is my favorite race and he didn't invite me to go. I am so upset about that. I guess it is like a guys thing. HHHMMMph when do I get to go somewhere. [mrsfrodotata]
That sounds quite unfair hun, how about fixing up a day out for yourself. [recycledgoth]
hi there, we havent been to holidays for some time now...If it was just petrol prices I'm sure we could put up with it but it's the knock on effect with certainty that everything else will rise also! Not only that our council tax, services bills and everything else has gone up too! But have our wages? Not on your Nellie.. anyway rant over in answer to your question I can't see I'll get away this year, but with any luck will be going away next year somewhere abroad hopefully - but no this year doubt it very much! but i doubt we would be able to go to neighboiur town leave aside europe [purnima175]
