We Are Going Out Of Town For The Holiday Weekend

We will go visit my brother in Oklahoma. It will be a time of eating good food and having lots of laughs. We also will be going through more things that belong to people we have lost in the last few years. My mom, and my sister. It is a sober reminder to cut down on my junk now. Simplify my life. Watch the sunrise with the family on one of those old, rickety outdoor porch swings. I will see you guys on Monday. My brother refuses to have internet at his house. I am interested in your Memorial Day plans, and your thoughts on life, perhaps on those you have lost. God bless.

I will watch your discussion, because we don't have a Memorial Day and I will love to see what the customs are. I lost my sister 10 years ago. She was only 36 years old. She left two small children behind age 2 and 4 It was a very difficult time as it is for everybody loosing a loved one. Well my friend have a good time and see you back on Monday. [Anniedup]

No plans for me, we don't have a holiday this weekend in Canada. Enjoy yours though, and have fun [bonbon664]

I am going to go and get flowers, probably at the local shop where they grow organic flowers and take them to my grandfather, my dad and my uncle's graves tomorrow. My husband has graduation for the school where he works. I don't know any of his kids, so we are not going to that. We will probably have a houseful of kids Saturday night. They are all coming to my house, because I don't want them out on the roads with all the holiday drinking to go out somewhere. I'm going to rent movies, get a bunch of soda and buy lots of pizza and junk food and keep it all in one of those food coolers and just let everyone stay over. [carpenter5]

Hi gerty, how nice to hear that you're going to visit your brother. I could still remember how you lost your sister. A poignant reminder that we should learn to do things that will give us happiness. We don't have Memorial Day in my country. We usually visit our dead loved ones on Nov. 1 or 2. Tomorrow is Saturday and I will bring my girls to Fun Ranch. It looks like a giant Lego playhouse where my girls can hop around. I will also meet my best friend there. On Sunday, we will attend Church services, have a nice lunch and shopping in the afternoon. Expect to see me greet you on Monday with a vengeance as I need to keep mylotting to earn back those dollars spent during the weekened, LOL! Happy holiday weekend, gerty. [charms88]
LOL, thanks for the pluses. It isn't my habit to check my star rating. For some reason, I checked mine a while ago and it had dropped one point. I don't remember ever stepping on anyone here. It doesn't matter to me anymore. [charms88]

Hi gerty, how nice to hear that you're going to visit your brother. I could still remember how you lost your sister. A poignant reminder that we should learn when to quit if there's no more happiness in it. We don't have Memorial Day in our country. Tomorrow is Saturday and I will bring my girls to Fun Ranch. It looks like a giant Lego playhouse where my girls can hop around. I will also meet my best friend there. On Sunday, its Church Services in the morning, a nice lunch and shopping in the afternoon. Well I hope you have a good time while visiting your brother. I don't really have any plans for this weekend. I'm still trying to think of something my mom can do that doesn't involve a lot of walking or standing for long periods. I know we will be making the rounds at the various cemetaries, placing flowers and planting some. We probably will go to the beach at some point this weekend and maybe to Garden in the Woods for some plants. They have all the native plants, it's run by the new england wildflower society. http://www.newfs.org/garden.htm [mari61960]
I am glad you are considering the problems your mom might have and still planning something with her, big plus from me on that. I also really enjoyed that link. I do not know when we might get back East again, but it looks like a place we would enjoy visiting. [GardenGerty]

We will miss you -- but I'm glad you'll be off having a wonderful time. Well sounds not so wonderful some of the time -- going through your mom's and sister's things. It's heartbreaking to think of that. I do hope you will get some of those laughs anyway. xoxo [cremechese]

Memorial Day is on the 1st of November where I live. Iīve lost my parents years ago and my thoughts are always with them. Especially with my mother. After all these years I still terribly miss her even though we didnīt live in the same country, I miss her voice on the phone, her letters and the occasional visits. Can you believe it... I wish you a wonderful weekend in Oklahoma. Looking forward to seeing you back here next week. Blessings Dana [dana234]

I am glad that you are going to meet your brother. Hope you have wonderful time there. We planned about camping for memorial day weekend, but we had to cancel it because of weather. I am so disappointed becasue we bought one of those portable camping generators. Now may be we will go for a day long picnic in some nearby lake side are. You have a safe and wonderful journey! [sweetlady10]

We sort of live up north so we are staying home for the holiday. We are going to yardwork and some inside work. Also having my daughter and grandaughter over. [dianel]

You know ,anyhow in my case,i work this forum this way ...I receive an email alert that my friend has posted a topic for discussion ...see the topic and click respond to this discussion and i am there ...by the way right to the topic and i donot see if its a topic from an interest group until my response is posted .....Now when topics like come i donot know what to do because we do not celebrate Memorial Day here..My suggestion and i mean it only in a helping way would have been to say If you donot celebrate Memorial Day in your country then how do you spend any holiday your country recognizes that would open the door to every member of Mylot to respond In Canada we celebrated the = to Memorial Day ,Victoria Day last Monday (Not all the firecrackers we had decades ago ) and i treated it like any other day When you are retired it seems some times you have to think about what day this is and even sometimes what month ....How about this length to a topic when i could have said and been within my rights ... "Yes Memorial Day is coming and I plan to do nothing" Good Luck and enjoy the deep south Weather should be great [vmks31]
I intended this to be open to other customs, and did not tell enough about Memorial Day, you are correct. I intend to start another discussion with a link that explains it a little bit. Many people just regard it as another three day weekend anymore. [GardenGerty]

Hi GardenGerty, have a great time in Oklahoma. I'm sure you will have a great time there. Which part of Oklahoma will you be going to? I have a friend in Enid. Take care and God bless! - Lyn [camar_lyn]
I am going to Guthrie, it is a little way from Enid. We do not go through it, the highway cuts off. I grew up in Midwest City, Oklahoma, but all of my family in that part is dead. Dad lives in Oklahoma City, but he is traveling. My brother pastors a church in Guthrie. [GardenGerty]

Is Memorial Day to think about those you have lost? Is it an official day? ie. A public holiday? Is this why you are going to Oklahoma? Sorry about the dumb questions, but we do not have Memorial Day in Australia. Have a good time catching up with your brother, even if he doesn't believe in tghe Internet. Eat lots of good food & drive safely. [jennybianca]
Not having internet is one way my brother keeps a very stressful job away from his house. I send him e-mails at work. He also feels like he does not need the expense. His major job is working for the state of Oklahoma, doing audits of addiction rehab centers. His second job is to pastor a church, and he tries to be frugal with his money so he can help support the church. Memorial Day, in its origins, seems to be much like your Anzac Day, a time to recognize those killed in wars. It later came to be time to remember anyone that you have lost. For many it is just the kickoff to summer. I will post a discussion with a link to a Memorial Day site, because people like you and several others are interested in other customs. That is like me learning about Anzac. [GardenGerty]

Have a safe fun-filled holiday. I plan on working on our basement, and in the kids rooms, as their new beds arrive on Wed of next week, and I hope to hit some areas around to take pictures.... Drive safely Blessings Moocb [oneandonemakesix]

I am glad that you can go and visit your brother. I hope you have a great time. The only plans that I have for Memorial Day is to go to the graves of my mom and dad and put flowers on there graves, I miss my mom and dad very much. God bless you to. [babystar1]

I pray you will have a safe trip gardengerty. I love family get togethers and miss them a lot. I am going to be helping my daughter and her hubby and new baby move into their new place. They start a new job as youth minister in a week or so and will be moving. I will see my mom this week too. I know what you mean about simplifying our lives. We get so busy and so caught up in day to day things, it's easy to forget we need to stop and smell the roses and cherish the times we have together with our loved ones. Let us know how the trip was when you get back. [applsofgld]

We are not going anywhere except to visit the graves and place flowers on our daughter, my father, all the grandparents, and my in-laws, and 2 uncles. I think that is the whole list. We just found out this morning that one of my husbands uncles passed away last night, and so we will be spending time with his family and getting ready for the funeral arrangements. I am glad that you will be spending time with family, that is important. My husbands family seems to only get together when someone dies or there is a wedding, and they all live within a few miles of each other. I think that is sad, but noone seems to want to change that fact. Have a great weekend! [tdbrower1969]

Wow! That is indeed great news. Go and have lots of fun. Wishing you and your family a happy, safe and fun filled trip. [dragontester]

I hope it's a happy and memorable weekend for you GG. We don't have this in Australia, though spending time at Mylot I'm constantly reminded of my Mum and others who have passed. remember happy times friend and blessings to you and yoursas well. [MsTickle]

Have a good time with your family. We will be spending time with family. We have lost several family members in the last couple years. Isn't it good to get together to remember them and talk about stories of past times with them? Summer food and grilling is enjoyable and this is the kick off for the season. [suscan]

We never do anything special on holidays. I bet that was neat though to go through stuff from your family and see and remember old things from the past. I love going through stuff from my family. It always brings back a flood of forgotten memories. Some good some not so good. I used to live in Oklahoma city I loved it there. [bwrattybaby]

I am here in India. This time I had not gone any where, my daughter, son in law, sons and the daughter in laws along with all the grandkids were in our home, as the schools were closed for summervacation. They had a very nice time quarreling with each other and enjying with all of us. Here there is no sea, the nearest beach is 500 km away. I love sea and visit a sea beach every year. But each time it is a different one. We also go to the places of pilgrimage, there are tons here, we are Hindu. Try to visit Orissa, my state next time. WELCOME. Thanks. ks [kalyani2007]
