i usually buy tee-shirts with prints about the places i visit. like the one i bought from a town that loves chilly food, it has the name of the town and the letters are made up of red peppers. and then, another one i bought from Baguio City with prints of the rice terraces and other popular spots.
and then i also buy a lot of Accessories and stuffs native to that place. but the most special i got, are the shells and sands i brought home from a beautiful beach we visited when i was in college. i got a lot of shells and a bottle of white sands. i had troubles bringing it home since they were heavy. ^__^;;
what about you?

responses and comments:
Sea shells are nice. I still have a little sand and some shells and pretty polished rocks from here and there, but lately we've mostly been buying small stuffed animals and French crystalWe particularly like the ones that sing and dance or say funny things. Since we travel quite a bit, we are starting to get quite a collection. Pretty soon we might have to buy them their own little apartment house, because they are starting to crowd our space a bit. [drannhh]
wow! that's a cute collection you got there! i love stuffed toys too but there arent any that are native to places that i've been too. ^__^ the shells i've collected came from the beaches i went too. when we are not swimming we are just walking along the beach and look for nice shells and dead corals that we can put in an aquarium. ^__^ [secretbear]
I like tee shirts too. I usually collect post cards and key chains from every place I go too. My brother likes to get shot glasses from every place he visits. I also have a little collection of coconut monkeys from three places so far. I also like to keep money as a souvenir. [dreamy1]
i collect key chains too! usually those printed with the names of the places i visit. i have never gone out of the country so the money are pretty much the same where i went. LOL what are coconut monkeys?? ^__^ [secretbear]
It depends on the place. When I went to New Orleans, I got a magnet with a streetcar on it. But when I went to Chinatown in San Francisco, I got a little doll.I also have some sand from the beach and some shells. And when I went to Montreal, I got a small Quebec flag.It all depends on the place. [sarahruthbeth22]
Oh. Thank you. [sarahruthbeth22]
I also bought t-shirts and keychains. That is what i always buy. I also buy sweets, or any candies from that place. When we visited Batangas before i buy some Coffee and some delicacies. I got to know what is the famous food from that city and i usually buy it and some souvenirs with the name of the city on it. [grecychunny26]
really?? waiii!!! i am so naiinggit! i havent been to puerto galera! we always make plans but that's all there's to it. plans. sketch. drawing. ^__^;; [secretbear]
i buy very traditional things like showpieces ,i prefer that it has to be made from local stuff,u know what i mean ,like if i go to sea beach then it should be of shells and all . [aissha]
what are showpieces aissha?? ^__^ [secretbear]
T-shirts. Other times it little things here and there but nothing too crazy. Like I have a bahamas photo, its nothing much but its some little decal I stick to the fridge. Other times its seashells from the beach or other things to expand my collections. [theprogamer]
i guess you've got a lot of collection theprogamer? ^__^ sometimes when i see a local stuff from the place i visit, and when i see an Anime stuff at the same time, i buy the anime stuff instead. LOL [secretbear]
it was a leg lift, pushup, crunches, chins, inclined push up, sissy squat, dips. without using weights or dumbbell or barbell. all this exercise for one minutes each. [jcyap888]
i' sorry i had posted at wrong discussion. [jcyap888]
well i also buy something memorable from place where i go. likes t-shirts, pin ups. small things that i could bring it back home. [jcyap888]
i usually buy things that are small and easy to carry. that way it wont add to my baggage. LOL i havent bought a poster or whatever. ^__^ [secretbear]
I love travelling and when ever I go to a new place,I try to buy items that are native to that place and which I can keep as souvenirs for myself and also give to my family and friends....I also try to buy items which are cheaply available in a particular place. Yes,I too love the sea and the beaches, and when I visited the river Ganges, which is considered a holy river,I brought back a bottle of water from the river as souvenir!!!! [mithrarao]
me too! i also buy cheap stuffs that i can buy in bulk or i buy in wholesale to have discounts so i can give some to my friends. ^__^ i love to share what i saw in a particular place so i try to buy a lot. cool! i wish i could go to River Ganges too! [secretbear]
I tend to go crazy in souvenir shops I love them but I remember when I went to New Zealand I decided to buy a sticker from each town I stayed in and stick it on my suitcase, I got back and showed by beautiful sticker covered suitcase off, I looked like a world traveller, then when I went back to work someone broke into my flat and took my suitcase filled with all my precious things.... oh well I still have my memories. [lilaclady]
awww.. that's sad. and annoying! how can anyone steal souvenirs? i mean, can they still be sold?? sheessh.. can some people really go so low?? ^.^ oh yeah... memories wont fade unless forgotten. taking a lot of pictures help me remember those memories. ^__^ [secretbear]
Hi secretbear!I only went on a real vacation once in my life to the Dominican Republic and bought 2 large paintings for us,2 small for my mom and his mom,2 t-shirts and brought some sea shells. All the other vacations we usually buy pens,paintings,t-shirts and stuff like that. The last vacation though,my boyfriend bought me a fleece red coat from a zoo to wear this fall and its nice and toasty,a sweater and teddy for our daughter and a sweater for my boyfriend, all from the zoo.The most souvenier i love the most is another vacattion we took this summer. My boyfriend stopped at an antique store(i love them!!)and i bought a antique bracelet made out of 2 small spoons bent to form a bracelet. It fit my very small wrist to a T!Its my most prized posession, besides my daughter lol, that i love.:):):) [peanutjar]
Thankyou for the best response, you are very kind:) Peanutjar:) [peanutjar]
I often but t-shirts too because less expensive..LOl but I also buy some native products of that paricular town. Now I want to start buting a ref magnet in every place/town or maybe countries I'm going to visit. I am into collecting ref magnets now a days and I guess it would be lovely to see them all in my ref one day. [cefaz_21]
yeah, its really nice to see your collections displayed and you see all of them, cute and nice. ^__^ your ref magnet would surely look awesome in your ref. i like seeing a bunch of things too in one place. ^__^ [secretbear]
Hello secretbear, I mostly buy ashtrays, key chains and mugs. Since they don't occupy so much spaces in luggages I can buy lots of them as a gift for my family and friends. And actually they are good souvenirs. :) Have a great day!!!1 [zabawaus]
yeah, small little things are practical to buy since they dont occupy too much space. i prefer to buy small things too coz i tend to buy so many coz i want to share it to so many people. ^__^;; [secretbear]
I like to buy key chains from the states I travel through. sunnywaters [sunnywaters]
i have lots of key chains too! a lot of them i bought from the places i visit but a lot of them i just bought here and there. LOL i love collecting key chains! some of my key chains came from my friends who have gone to some place. ^__^ [secretbear]
Hubby and I started picking up shot glasses from places that we visit as well as a small refrigerator magnet! We have a gameroom in our home and he made a wonderful display thingy for the magnets. He took a piece of sheet Metal and framed it. The magnets are displayed on this and people have a lot of fun looking at our magnets! For instance, the magnet from new york city is a yellow taxi with 'I heart NY' on the side! He also made something to display the shot glasses. He used mirror tile and then made a grid from spray-painted paint stirrers...and then framed it! The shot glasses sit in the little openings. Again, folks have a ball looking at our shot glasses! For some friends I brought back hand-hammmered car and truck rims. They're far more unique than the usual manufactured stuff! [crazynurse]
that really sounded so cute! ^__^ i would also love to collect shot glasses but it wouldnt be so advisable because there are so many hyperactive kids in out house and they might break it all! ^.^;; magnets are cute! we had magnet letters from A to Z but my nephew played on it so much that they dont stick anymore to our red. LOL [secretbear]
Not so much now, but as a child I always bought a little tankard with the place name on it, little glass tankards, I still have them even now in a box at my parents. I also liked pencils with the place name on them. Mum used to collect thimbles so I always bought her one back of the place I visited. Now I'm older I just keep the memories on my digital camera and on my computer! I don't collect stuff now as I move so often I hate collecting clutter! [wolfie34]
i do that too! i collect pictures aside from stuffs. ^__^ i have tons of picture and i usually hurt my wallet when i spend a lot on developing them. LOL im not satisfied seeing it in the computer and i like putting it in Albums and then decorate it. ^__^ [secretbear]
I have a large collection of T shirts from places I have visited, and gigs I have attended too. One of my favourites is one I bought in Cornwall but it is far too rude to post the wording on here - lol [recycledgoth]
haha.. i would have liked to know what that t-shirt says but i guess we'd be sorry if you post it here. ^__^;; [secretbear]
As a kid I collected Keychains. So I would usually always purchase keychains when I'd go places. Actually I still do. Shot glasses are always nice to have also. Sometimes I still like my stuffed animals or a book or painting/poster of something I saw while I was there. I worry too much about what to get family than myself though. and I end up forgetting to get myself anything special. [raychill]
just because you hate doing it doesn't mean you shouldn't. [raychill]
hi secretbear i also buys t-shirts as souvenirs. some of the best brand clothing can be cheap outside of the US! but most of the people i gave didn't wear the t-shirts actually it made me disappointed ^^ but i understand, so the next time i went traveling, i bought small souvenirs like key-chain and refrigerator magnetic toys thanks .. [unuzzz]
maybe the t-shirts didnt fit them? that's the reason why i dont like buying shirts for other people. im not good at guessing body sizes. ^__^;; and i dont like to waste money. LOL so i usually buy small souvenirs that can be displayed or collected rather than be wore. ^__^ [secretbear]
I usually buy postcards as souvenirs. I have a small collection of postcards and this is a way to both remember the places I've visited and enrich my collection. [stvasile]
Thanks for your intention, but I have been very disappointed in the recent past by the mail service from my country, so I think if you'd send me a postcard, it will probably never reach me. [stvasile]
Well,I like to buy keyrings,shoes,house decoration,momentum and jewellery. [2babita]
i like buying jewelries too. ^__^ i love buying bracelets and earrings. [secretbear]
Yep, t-shirts is the easist and most memorble souuvenir I buy. for me, it is the most visible and obvious proof that i really to that place. I have two shirts, from baguio and tagaytay (it was actually spelled -tagay tay!LoL), with some I already gave to friends and relatives. I am also out for those necklaces, bracelets, and hats. But I won't surely forget the best souvenir a traveller could ever have, the foods that are unique on that place and the culture too!;) [raijin]
You should, besides it's already Oktoberfest!;) [raijin]
When I go on trips I like to buy handcrafts, be it ceramics, pottery, macrame, glass or embroidery, as I like doing handwork myself, so I can appreciate the amount of work involved. The things I bring back always bring good memories of the places I have visited and they are good pieces of decoration too! [sylvia13]
wow. that's a very interesting hobbies you got there. its very domestic. ^__^ i think its kind of unique now to have hobbies like that. ^__^ [secretbear]
When I go on trips I like to buy handcrafts, be it ceramics, pottery, macrame, glass or embroidery, as I like doing handwork myself, so I can appreciate the amount of work involved. The things I bring back always bring good memories of the places I have visited and they are good pieces of decoration too! [sylvia13]
Hi secretbear I usually don't buy as I don't have the $$$, but I always make sure to take a little souvenier, like some shells, a pinecone, a leaf, or something. I am very sentimental and romantic, and girly. [TheHairDresser]
that's very cute rozann. i usually get free things like that too when i dont have the money. :P [secretbear]
I usually buy little souvenirs that are easy to carry so that I can buy a lot and I can give some to my friends and loved ones. Most of the time I buy accessories, keychains and ballpens with beautiful designs. I also buy refrigerator magnets because my mother love those =) [brew2x]
yeah. small stuffs are the practical things to buy. for all those people waiting for our comeback and awaiting their pasalubong. ^__^;; [secretbear]
I like to buy cloth, food and souvenier. [hassanah]
Usually I buy T-shirt and refrigerator magnet. I like to buy the oversize t-shirt so then when the color or the picture is not good anymore, I use it for sleeping or at home clothes. As for the refrigerator magent, I collect them and put it on my refrigerator so then everytime I open my fridge, I can see where have I been. [biran77]
I usually get something that's unique to that place. For instance, at Lassen I get something carved from Lava, at the beach I bring shells. I do like to get t-shirts but something always ends up happening to them lol. I do still have my shirt that says I climbed Mt. lassen. Couldn't do that now! [cremechese51]
i think buying the native product of a place is the best thing to buy and the best souvenir. ^__^ [secretbear]
yeah t-shirts are cool specially with prints of the landmark of that place and also some small items that i can make as souvenirs from that place, also i'm fun of buying the delicacy of that certain place, uummmm yummy. but the most common thing that people usually buy is key chain. right? [s_v_clark_me]
i think so. because key chains are small and we can buy a lot of them and give some to our friends. ^__^ [secretbear]
I buy magnets, to put in my fridge... beacuse there is always a plece to put them...I hate to buy stuff that you can never use... sometime t shirts, shot glasses... [terrych]
yeah something that you can use and share... [terrych]
I like to visit the zoos of places I visit and get a t-shirt or a kangaroo stuffed animal, if I can find one. I'm all about me some kangaroos. I had a friend that used to collect Hard Rock Cafe t-shirts everywhere she went. She had a bunch because she got to travel way more than me. I prefer different articles of clothing, like handmande, cheap restaurant aprons as gifts. [Flight84]
hi flight! wow. that's unique of you. this is the first time i met someone who likes kangaroos. happy [secretbear]
Either clothing or Ornaments for the home, maybe a small picture/painting, candles, accessories and things like that. SOmetime I even collect postcards too. [maddysmommy]
Yup I can understand that, that's probably why he either buys things that he can roll or fold up or small souvenirs :) [maddysmommy]
Everytime i go to other country. I always buy postcards as souvenirs for myself :) Because i am collecting postcards from aboard. And since 2 years ago, i start buy magnetic for refrigenerator also everytime i go aboard. [julianarw]
hi juliana! wow. you're so lucky to be able to travel to different countries. happy [secretbear]
First I started with tee shirts....then progressed to buying prints from local artists. Like in Seaside Fl. where they have little shops where they sell their prints for dirt cheap..... [jillhill]
hi jill! what kind of prints are they? [secretbear]
hello secretbear that is neat that you get a t-shirt when you travel. myself, when i go somewhere, i always usually will try to pick out a cool looking magnet to hang on the referigerator and i also collect shot glasses and i will get a shot glass with whatever the case should be on the glass. i probably have around thirty shot glasses...i even have one with M&M's on it...:) and i also have several beautiful ones from the beach... have a wonderful day! [RLFinNash]
it doesn't take long to collect things. going to thirty different places over a period of fifteen years, that is a long time. lol i want a shot glass shelf for one of my Christmas presents this year. have a beautiful day today! [RLFinNash]
Hi there I rarely buy a souvenier what I usually do is try to collect things from the area. Postcards, beer mats and shells and pebbles which I place in my rock garden. My mother used to collect dolls which I have now got. Denise [kneeshka123]
hi denise! isn't those stuffs enough to be called souvenirs? after all, they came from the places you visited. happy [secretbear]
for me i bought tee-shirts, keychains, caps/hats, bangles or just anything as long as there is a print of the name of the place I visited. [MarieJ23]
thanks for the response marie. happy i have t-shirts like that too. only when i went to Bohol, i wasn't able to buy one because i didn't like any of the prints in the stall we went to and we never had enough time to go to other stalls. [secretbear]
When I went to the Bahamas last year, I bought a lot of tshirts. I would have loved a straw hat, but didn't get one. Perhaps on the next go round. I bought plenty of postcards, some Bahamian dollars, I have a couple of magnets from there; One I got from there had a hibiscus flower on it. I thought it was real cute.but I usually get just tshirts, magnets and postcards. [Savvynlady]
It's just a nice little place that you can eat, shop and have a good time at. Not too much. I could see the Atlantis Hotel not far from where I was. But for the most part, that's all I did. Next time, I'll venture out and such. [Savvynlady]
I would love to have t-shirts from places I visit but they are just so expensive. Even the poor quality ones. In fact, any souvenier type stuff is way over priced I think. I don't know what it's like overseas. [MsTickle]
hi mstickle. happy here in our country there are lots of cheap stores that sells beautiful souvenirs that are affordable. i think its part of promoting the place. happy [secretbear]
I usually like to get accessories and stuff that I can display around the house. Sometimes, I also buy books which have interesting stuff about the place I visited. When I went to Nigeria a couple of years back, I bought a book about the life of a Kenyan girl and it had everything about their traditions. [SViswan]
hi sviswan! books would be a nice remembrance of a place. and its an easy way to learn about a lot of things about the place. but in some places, there are no readily available novels which features the place. you'd just find traveling guides and brochures. happy [secretbear]
I also buy T-shirts for my family members and key chains for my friends. :) I also like to bring pasalubong from different places -- like piyaya (iloilo), peanut brittle (baguio), pastel (camiguin), peanuts (iligan), etc. I dont remember them all. Before, I bought stuffs from Blue Magic for my friends since we don't have a Blue Magic shop in Davao City. [michecu]
hi michecu! i also buy pasalubong, as much as possible, so that i can let the family have a taste of the place i went to. should have bought butterscotch in iloilo! biscocho house makes very delicious butterscotch. happy [secretbear]
I like to get a lot of different things. cups, Tee-shirts. when I went to Mexico, I brought a a little stool. made out of leather and wood that you fold up, a blanket. [marciascott]
hi marcia! those are really good souvenirs. did you encounter a hard time going home carrying that stool? in some places that i went, there are stuffs that i would have bought only they are so big that i didn't buy them because its hard to travel carrying them. [secretbear]
I hardly travel.. And the only place i have visited was bangkok :) its a nice place with friendly ple around.. What i bought back was just a couple of tees :( [kun2349]
haha.. My country is so small, at most i give myself a week, and i will be able to tour the whole of singapore, going to those tourist spots and eatery.. lol =D [kun2349]
I like buying souvenirs. I try to get different novelty items such as keychains, refrigerator magnets, shells, etc. My favorite souvenir that I usually buy is a t-shirt that has designs of that wonderful place visited. [MariaD]
hi mariaD! i guess were on the same turf when it comes to souvenirs. happy [secretbear]
Yeah! I normally go with t-shirts so that you can flaunt that you have been to that place. hihi. As souvenirs for my friends... i get them keychains as well as native delicacies. btw, I was a local resident of Baguio for 4 years during college. Not that it is important, just saying. Ü [athomeakodito]
lol yeah, its a way of bragging that you have gone there and there. ^__~ what school in Baguio did you go to? [secretbear]
well, i guess t-shirts for the average spender. local newspaper can be picked as souvenir as it is also cheap and handy and contains lots of memories of the day. local postcards can do to...^__^....meowww! [singlepixel]
newspapers? that's a new one. do you buy local newspapers at places you go to single? [secretbear]
u got so many response so i thought better to add new instead of searching my own,lol showpieces are decorative pieces like a small idol or doll or soemthing like that ,i hope u get this right this time or i elaborate more. [aissha]
hi aissha! yeah, i think i can imagine the stuff you're talking about. those miniature models of animals, people, something like that? [secretbear]
I usually buy books that contain the history of the place so that I can understand the place better, then the famous items of that place, as you said, if it is beach, shell items and picture cards etc. Later on when I go through them, I feel I have visited the places once again and get a feel of those places and get sweet memories of my visit. [Buchi_bulla]
thanks for the response buchi. its really better if you know the history of a place so that you can more appreciate it when you explore it. happy [secretbear]
hi girl! i think i know the place you mean here, coz i think i came from that place haha! i usually buy keychains too and shirts. if its a beach, i'd definitely take some sand and put it in a small bottle. unfortunately, its prohibited to take sand from bora! yikes! when we climbed a mountain, we'd take some unusual leaves and a few small stones.. last time, we went to subic i was able to buy a couple of stuff - mugs, pillows and a shirt having the name of the resort, aside from that i also took with me small vial of shampoo and scented soap from the hotel! haha! [kuting]
its not allowed to take sand from bora?? what's the reason for it? are they afraid that the sand might ran out? ^__^;; i also took a plant that was new to my eyes when we climbed a mountain way way before. i was still a high school student then. i just took one plant and now, there's a lot of them in our garden. even if i don't tend to them, they keep on growing. ^__^;; [secretbear]
i usually buy some special things made in the places that i visit. for example, when i went to Qingdao which is a seaside city, then i bought some colorful stones and beautiful shells to my parents and friends. then we would pick some of them to make neck laces and hand laces. they are special, so my parents and friends like them very much. i think it is a good idea to buy T-shirts with prints about the places you visit. i will buy a T-shirt with prints about the name of the place which i will visit. thank you for your good idea. [wonderful1]
you're welcome wonderful. ^__^ Qingdao is in Taiwan right? [secretbear]
i buy foods, like in baguio i like their peanut brittle, lengua de gato! i also buy native products-- famous weaved cloths, little sculptures. shirts too. :) [jdpartosa]
thanks for the response jd. where are you?? [secretbear]
So far I haven't visited that many places yet. But i am planning to tour the different provinces of our country. And if chance permits me, i would also like to tour the whole world. Normally, the souvenirs I bought was t-shirt where the name of the place is written on it. So everytime I wears it I remember the place and the memories i had with it. [izathewzia]
i wish i will be able to travel the world too in the future. that would be so much fun! and i'll get beautiful souvenirs! happy [secretbear]
hi secretbear, When I travel, I like to collect shot glasses from differnet cities. I buy collector spoons from differnt places, to give to friends. I buy T-shirts for my sons. I buy postcards of the most famous places in big cities, or far away cities. I have brought home lizards, and live crawfish from Louisiana, on the airplane. This is the weirdest thing that I have done. It was before 9-11. I would probably not be able to do that now, and get away with it. Happy posting.. [crazy_ol_lady]
hi secretbear, The live lizards I gave to my grandsons, and the crawfish I gave to a friend that had a fish tank and wanted to raise them. I kept one pair for myself. My family watched the female lay eggs, kill off her mate, and watched the eggs hatch. Then we watched them grow up until we only had one left. That last one was five years old when she died. The whole process was very informative for the kids and myself. That's one way to learn about the life of a certain animal. [crazy_ol_lady]
I brought home various souvenirs from places I visited, like shells, or sand, sometimes special foods, when I was in Malta I bought a nice wallet. [book1962]
thanks for the response book. happy [secretbear]
yes,i usually buy something from the different places i visit.i smoking,so i often buy diffient cigarette and ashtrays for myself and my friends.now ,i have about one hundred and fifty ashtrays.in my bookroom, the ashtrays are full of room.my wift said that she would put off them from room.i said that, haha, you'd better throw me first. as a gag gift a for a skinny friend, i bought some European body fat scales! i will buy them for ever, until i can't move. [dreamstone]
lol that's some collection you got there dreamstone. you probably should buy a glass case where you can put all of them and then you can display them inside your house. wink [secretbear]
I used to collect those souvenir coffee travel mugs, but not so much lately. I am saving my money so collecting stuff is out of the question. I tried to collect pamphlets but my husband decided to throw them away. I guess he does not want people to know where we went. We do not have that much space to stuff collections anyway. [suspenseful]
I wanted to keep the pamphlets. I know that I can go on the net and find the information there, but it would have been nice to show people where we were. I do have a couple of maps and some information about Vancouver and the Northern States and the Mall of the Americas. Unfortunately, we did not go to the Mall. sad [suspenseful]
I don't personally I think they are a waste of money! They are never used! I rather save it! [liperoterachel]
thanks for the response rachel. tee-shirts are not a waste of money. they are clothes and they can be used. it depends on what kind of souvenir is it. happy [secretbear]
I usually end up buying curios from the various places that I visit. Local handicrafts, hats, wood-carvings, bronze statues etc which not only give a feel of the place but are also indicative of their native region. I like to decorate my rooms with these knick-knacks. They make the rooms interesting and beautiful and anyone walking into my house will have a look at these and understand the places I have visited. Then we usually end up having lively travel discussions, lot of information is exchanged and I end up planning my next visit. Being an utterly incorrigible food addict, I also buy local food and if these are dry and can be carried, I do that with as much as I can. Then after coming home, I will set back and relish every bite. I am very selfish in these matters. I can give away expensive mementos but not food and savouries. Every bite further reminds me of the places I visited and the wonderful time I had. And as you each state in India is famous for its own handloom fabric, so if I like anything fancy, maybe I will buy a good saree too. So all in all, I end up quite a lot on my shopping whenever I travel and you should see the look on my hubby's face lol! [sudiptacallingu]
lol i understand you sudipta! i feel like shopping too whenever i go to a wonderful place. but my traveling allowance won't permit me to so i just settle on little things. but its really fun to reminisce the experience in that place while looking at the souvenirs or eating the delicacies. happy [secretbear]
I buy Stamps,Pens , Postcard Pictures or some Artifacts from that Place. [ptrikha1]
thanks for the response ptrikha. i have never bought stamps because i thought they can't be bought. lol do post offices really sell them? [secretbear]
Usually I buy t-shirts with prints about the places too. And also keychains, since they are easy to carry and inexpensive too. hehe. I also buy food native to that place. [swirlz]
thanks for the response swirlz. happy [secretbear]
Usually I buy typical clothes of the places I'm visiting but only if they are of cotton or linen. I like specially those embroidered. If I eat something that I like I also try to buy the ingredients that I can't find in my country to repeat the recipi when I'm back home. [franziska]
hi franziska! embroideries are pretty souvenirs. but they are usually expensive so i haven't bought one. ^__^;; [secretbear]
I think this is interesting as some people just HAVE to buy something with the name of the place on it, however tacky, and some people specialise in items such as pens or as you do tee shirts, which are always useful. We have a problem in England in that there are a few stores which insist on opening everywhere, which is eroding the character of the places and that the service stations (places you can stop on the way to a destination and eat or relax) also sell items such as buckets and spades, inflatables, which once you could only buy at the seaside, which was something which made the day out so special. The quality of a lot of the souvenirs is also awful. I tend to look for unusual gift shops and try to buy something I have not seen anywhere else, which is obviously a lot harder than it used to be. My favourite place is in a town called Rye, where they have an antique shop full of inexpensive and unusual items. I am lucky in that we travel by car due to my mobility problems so everything gets put into the trunk and I do not have to worry about carrying it. Have you bought any interesting tee shirts lately? [shelagh77]
hi shelagh. that's a really sad situation. souvenirs should be of good quality because they are supposed to last for a long time right? some people doesn't really understand that souvenirs are supposed to be durable because they are carriers of memories. the last interesting tee-shirt i bought was, although i didn't bought it from a place i went to, i bought it from a department store, its a maroon one with a print at the front that says "BEER heals all wounds". lol [secretbear]
I would always buy some postcard and send them to my mum , grandmother and other family. For myself I would buy a guide book with pictures, because I can read it at home and learn about the history and other interestign things.I have already few of them at home. Not much though, becuase I figured out this idea not very long time ago. Also now if I am in the USA they don't have many guide books here , like we have in Europe. They are on every corner and you can buy them anywhere. [laurika]
hi laurika! that's a very nice collection of souvenirs. guide books are really of help when traveling into a place. happy [secretbear]
i usually try not to choose those big items. buy smaller stuffs so that u can buy for more people as souvenirs and they also take up less space in your luguage and you can bring more items home. then there will be more space left to buy stuffs for yourself also. haha! handmade souvenirs are great! they do have a better keepsake value. that's what i feel though :) [symon_08]
hi symon! you are right. if you buy smaller and not so expensive stuffs, you can buy a lot for more people and it would be easy to carry. that is why i usually buy small and cute stuffs. so i can give to more people. happy [secretbear]
I like to buy tshirts and for some reason sheriff badges. I dont travel a lot so really ive been to Disneyland and Oregon in the past four years. I got a badge at Disneyland and one in Oregon. I think its a cool thing to collect. [kiobug]
hi kiobugs! i'm sure sheriff badges are cool things to collect. but i think they are available only in your country. happy [secretbear]
hmmmm. i usually buy what thier special tea, they have, mostly a small things that is not hard to carry [wishme_luck]
thanks for the response wishme_luck. happy [secretbear]
Oh it really depends on teh place...since i am very much in love with Ireland, all the time i used to go there i would come home with plenty of things from teh place, from clothes (sweatshirts, hoodies, t-shirts,...everything :p), accessories, books, little silly things of any kind, calendars,...anything to make my house more Irish :p Other places, i usually get t-shirts too, and calendars, mouse-pads with pictures of teh place, postcards to give to relatives and friends sometimes...others i keep them for myself :p [valyushah]
hi valyushah! Ireland must be really interesting! in my case, i am in love with Japan. i easily get interested with things and stuffs that came from Japan. its my dream to go there someday. i'm trying to save money but as time goes by, its getting more and more expensive to go there. doh [secretbear]
We usually buy tshirts. But i'm also thinking about starting maybe a magnet collection or post cards from the place we go. I'd like to collect something to show where our family has been. The kids are getting a little older now, I can't wait to take lots of family trips. [ravinskye]
hi ravinskye. family trips sound nice. we rarely do them because we're a big family and its expensive to go to a trip with all of us. maybe you can buy souvenir Photo Frames in each place you go and put your family picture on it. happy [secretbear]
i always buy t-shirts for my grandmother cause she just loves them but for me depending where i go if its somewhere tropical i love collecting sand in tiny bottles and bringing them home. Its a cute gift to give if u make keychains out of them And i always get those fancy shot glasses everyone has haha. [ashlena]
i also think that sands on small little glasses are cute! one of my classmates back in college gave me one which was in a keychain. it was so cute. i think i still have it somewhere in my cabinet. happy [secretbear]
I usually buy souvenirs as small things and which are of low price so that I can buy more for my relatives and my family. Smaller stuffs occupy less space in your luggage and you can buy many items. Last time I went to paris from there I bought Small Key chains of Efiel Tower. [t_sireesha04]
If I am buying for myself; I go with whatever catches my fancy. Though I love dolls and Hello Kitty Collectibles mostly. If for another find out what they collect and match it to the place visiting. That's the good find. ^-^ [MH4444]
hi mh! i an officemate who also like hello kitty. she's just crazy about it! when she goes to Hongkong she won't come home without a Hello Kitty stuff. [secretbear]
IF I go out of the country, I collect money. If I am in the States, then I find something small- keychain, etc. that I like that has something to do with the place I visited. I also have a large amount of postcards and travel brochures. I do like to have things that are native to the country or town as it means more and the memories are better. [carolscash]
yeah, i agree. it means more memories. great memories. happy [secretbear]
I am a tee shirt freak i love them i buy shirt from almost ever place i vist and i will also by shirts from business in my area I have one shirt i go from Hell yeah thats a realtown it says i have been to hell and back LOL [bronie123]
I like post cards with pretty scenery on them. I can slip them into my photo book when I get home and keep them in good condition. [Sacrificialclam]
that's right. post cards are good stuffs to place in scrap books and photo albums. [secretbear]
when i visti some beautiful place i really don't buy much stuff or msouvenirs. since i really will not going to use them and mostly they are not really cheap. and i really don't like the souvenirs item they usually sold since it is not interesting for me. but i will sometimes buy smoe ti shirts which i think will moer useful and not really a waste of money. before i like buying some items i can display at home. but they are not really that cool and i tend to forget them once i brought them home. and i really just throw that away after a while. so i think it's just best to buy a shirt. [jointoearn]
yeah. tee shirts are the most practical souvenirs we can buy. also we can buy home furnitures too but they are way too big to carry and expensive. [secretbear]
I usually look for unique stuff that originally manufacture in that place or which can easily be recognized coming from the place I visited. This is what the native folks is usually making (home made)like hat, bags, necklace, etc. [tholitz]
yeah. like guitars of Cebu, or strawberries of Baguio, or shoes from Liliw, etc. happy [secretbear]
I love collecting souvenirs as well. I usually collect shirts, rings, bracelets, key chains, etc. I also like sharing those souvenirs with my friends and loved ones. [blademaiden]
thanks for the response blademaiden. happy [secretbear]
I do the same I usually buy t-shirts and small stuffs like key chains. [anastacia22]
thanks for the response anastacia. it seems keychains and tee shirts are common souvenirs. wink [secretbear]
We are the same, I am fond of collecting like t-shirt, wallets, small accesories, and other things that bears the name of the place I am visiting. This is a sort of remembrance.. and I keep it. [celestial052506]
hi celestial! its really great to see stuffs from the places we've visited. i think its something that we can be proud of since not everybody can go places to places. happy [secretbear]
tee shirts are for me too.. I love to shop this thing when I visit a place and I usually ask mechants what is the best thing to buy in that particular place I visit.. :) [aj2006]
thanks for the response aj. sometimes its better to ask them of what is the best thing to buy since they know the place. happy [secretbear]
any souvenirs would do as long as their cute, unique, cheap and useful lolz but if i don't have a big amount of money with me, i'll just buy a keychain or an earring [rhane7315]
hi rhane! thanks for the response. its really better to buy useful souvenirs. we can use it all the time and remember the place we bought it from at the same time. happy [secretbear]
I usually buy tee-shirts as well when I am visiting other places. I also buy postcards to send out or just to collect. I will also buy keychains from that area, mugs and in some places I will buy bottles of wine. Those are the most common things that I will buy while I am away. There may be other things that I will buy that are rare or do not exist in my area. [kgwat70]
thanks kgwat. its good to buy unique products that are only found in a certain place. they are good pieces of a collection. happy [secretbear]
Hi secretbear - My husband likes to collect key chains from different places. I collect refrigerator magnets. We just traveled cross-country from California to Virginia, as we were moving back home. We got almost every state we went through but did miss some. We decided that is a good excuse to have to go back there again someday! LoL! We drove through California (of course), Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Virginia. I had never been to a few of those states before so it was fun. I would like to take the drive again someday though so we can spend more time in each state. As far as collecting items from places we travel to... I do try to buy my teenage son a t-shirt from different places we go. It can get kinda expensive though so I do not get to buy as many as I'd like to. Sometimes I buy other small, relatively inexpensive, things I might see along the way that really catch my eye. I bought my mom a nice wind chime in New Mexico that was painted and had "New Mexico" painted in little letters on the bottom part of it. There are sooo many things I'd love to buy from places I go but monetarily I just can't afford to purchase them... maybe someday! :) [koalatbs]
Yes, I do like buying nice little inexpensive things when I travel to different places. I hope next time we travel that we can spend more time and really enjoy our trip and the places we go more. [koalatbs]
It depends on the place. Many places have local specialties such as jams, jellies cheese, sausage, chocolate and wine. I bought some wine in Malta, chocolate in Germany and olive oil in Spain. I live in Canada and we are not allowed to bring back any animal or plant meterial or soil. If they find it at customs they take it and I could face a fine. So I don't have many shells and no sand. I have a jar of pebbles that I collected in different places. [Lindalinda]
hi linda! wow. really? there's a prohibition like that in your country? that's kinda strict. [secretbear]
For myself and the people who are really close to me and will appreciate it, I usually get t-shirts. That's because it will be of use to us all. The thing with these is that they can be quite expensive so you can't buy a lot when you're on a tight budget. That being the case, I pick up keychains or refrigerator magnets to give away. Bookmarkers, too, are a good choice as souvenirs. I talk about giving things away because it is the custom here to bring something back to people who know you've gone away somewhere. [alena824]
hi alena! yeah, its a custom here in our country alright. wink you go to a far away place and when you get back home, people expect you to bring something for them. I like to buy them each a travel package highlighting the different places I've been. [secretbear]
Dear friend, I do often buy something as remembrance of that place where I visit as a tourist or for the first time. Mostly I would buy something that is rare and that is only or most commonly available in that place only. May be something that is not much available in the place I live or costly things that are cheap in that place where I visit. When I went to visit Taj Mahal I brought a small Taj Mahal that is kept as fancy in homes may be a small within 6 inches width and height.happy [SHAMRACK]
hi shamrack! wow. you've been to Taj Mahal! amazing. i wish i can go there in the future too. i'll probably buy a miniature of the place too. ^__^ [secretbear]
I'm not much on souvenirs. Last thing I bought for myself was a book marker. I usually buy cheap tee shirts or usable/ eatable things for presents. Let's face it. There really isn't much that can't be bought anywhere else. It's a waste of money to buy nicknack's. That's why I always get usable things, that get used, used up and tossed. [TheCatLady]
thanks for the response catlady. it is really better to buy useful souvenir stuffs like tee shirts. happy [secretbear]
Usually t'shirts. My soon to be ex husband likes to buy shot glasses when he goes someplace. One time we purchased a soda maker. Odd purchase, I know. [seabeauty]
soon-to-be? ^__^;; thanks for the response seabeauty. happy [secretbear]
I usually buy tee shirts, and tote bags. My last vacation I purchased a backpack, beautiful jewelry, and drinking glass. I guess it does not matter what the item is if I like it I am going to buy it. [venshida]
yeah i guess. sometimes i buy stuffs too not because they came from the place i visit but just because i like them. happy [secretbear]
i too usually buy t-shirts as souvenirs from the places i went to. i remember been to some places in mindanao and the visayas, when i was still working as a technical personel in one of the computer companies based in manila. i had been to zamboanga, davao, iloilo, cagayan de oro. i have at least one shirt of those cities with their names printed on them. they also have prints of their popular places or their festivals. [neildc]
